My mom says I shouldn't do a registry and put on the invitation, 'monetary gifts preferred.' I think that is soooo tacky and want to do a registry to give people the option between giving money and purchasing a gift. FH and I have been living together almost 3 years and the apartment is completely furnished. We want to buy a house soon after the wedding and I don't think it makes sense to carry all the gifts with us to a new home. What should I do?

Re: Registry or Not?
It is tacky to put anything about gifts on your wedding invitation. Most people around here give money when they go to weddings and boxed gifts for the shower. Does your family not do it that way and that's why your mom said that? Either way if you are having a shower you really should register, otherwise you will get a lot of crap you neither need nor want.

agreed - nothing should be stated about gifts on the actual wedding invitation. Like Jesebelle said, most people around here give monetary gifts at a wedding and regular gifts at a shower.

and yeah, I wouldn't put anything about a registry or monetary gifts. I think most people assume that if you don't put a registry, they should give money. There will be a few that still buy you a gift, but there is nothing you can do about that

Register... my feeling is that people will give you less when you ask for money directly because most people would see it as tacky
ETA: OHHH i thought this was for your shower! yeah you shouldnt put anything on the wedding invite...

i agree. one of my friends is actually doing this and i told him really? cuz like above - most ppl give money for weddings. but i guess they wanted to make it clear - i couldn't say much after that - their choice.

Re: Registry or Not?
I wish I could ask for money!!! My family is from the West coast where money is not the typical wedding gift. My FH jokes that we are going to have so much crap to deal with after the wedding!!! We already own a house so it's hard to register when you have everythign!

So the wedding registry is the same that's used for the shower? I thought the shower was for lingerie and goodies I think my mom is assuming that everyone will try to buy something off the registry if I have one.

The bridal shower is when you will get your registry items... in NY the typical wedding gift will be cash

Re: Registry or Not?
Thank you ladies so much! Advice taken. One more question... I went to a wedding where on the invitation there was an account number for Bank of America that was created for monetary gifts. I'm assuming this was so the bride wouldn't have to carry cash and checks around all night with the possibility of losing it. She also had her registry listed as well. Is this ok?

Oh, ok thanks!! I feel so lost with this wedding stuff. I'm the first out of all my friends getting married and absolutely no person in my bp had a wedding. No help at all...

OMG! nooooooooooooo...that's even worse than asking for monetary gifts. you might as well put a printed deposit slip in with the invite.

Re: Registry or Not?
We registered to Kohls, and BBB and we have been in our house for 2 yrs, will be 3 by the time we marry. We registered for a Dyson Animal, and the usual kitchen and bath stuff, frames and albums. We are also registering for Disney's Honeymoon registry. Guests can add spa visits, buy merchandise, flowers to be sent to the room, etc. FMIL thinks it's tacky, but I know some of my family members will go through them.
