I am pricing rehearsal dinners and they are all about $35-$40 pp without alcohol. I wanted to just do bottles of wine on the tables and limit it to that, but I was told that is cheap and looks bad if people want something else to drink. Suggestions/advice?

Re: rehearsal dinner costs
We are not having a rehersal dinner, but hosting dinner the night before for oot.
It will be about 35 people at about $35pp.
We decided we are NOT doing any liquor at all. That adds $16pp and we wont pay it.
If they want a drink they can pay for it. We just cant afford it, its too much.
We decided all or nothing, and went with nothing (no liquor we pay for)
Hope this helps.

I am paying about $40.00 per person and we are only having red/white wine and soda. Whoever said that was cheap does not know what they are talking about. You are paying for the dinner, its not a night out for everyone to get drunk, its a dinner during the week (well at least mine is) as a way to say thank you to your bridal party and family for being an important part of your day!

I think beer and wine is more than enough. The wedding is the next day to a few days later. Try bargaining ask if you can get a discount if you pay cash I am having mine at Sergio's in Massapequa and I am paying a lot less and it includes beer and wine.

Re: rehearsal dinner costs
I never considered it cheap. We did just beer and wine for our rehearsal AND for our engagement dinner (we only had 35 people for the e-party). Our guests seemed fine with that both times. We ran a tab just in case anyone ordered drinks we would pay it at the end of the night.... but most people didn't.

Re: rehearsal dinner costs
I agree.. i dont think its cheap. As other posters said its a rehearsal dinner not an all out formal party. Every rehearsal dinner i went to, including my own next week =), will be beer and wine. OUr RD venue doesnt even have hard alcohol bc they dont have the license for it.
We are paying $30 per person at a green seafood restaurant.. food is delish.. it includes hot apps (calamri, grilled octipus etc)., cold apps (dips and greek salad), as well as a choice of about 10 entrees from whole bronzinis, and snappers , to steak, and the beer , wine, soda and dessert.
Its a great deal.. we were luck to ffind it-- we didnt have a private room.. and didnt care bc it was only supposed to be like 15 of us.. now its about 30+ so I am a bit worried.. Great place for a small group, but its in Bayside, not Nassau

I was getting same quotes as you, and then contacted Sunset Harbour (East Patchogue), and am paying about that, WITH a cocktail hour, beer, wine and soda. No one could beat the price.

thats seems a little expensive..try looking at smaller places? but its whatever you can do..its not cheap to only have wine - they should be happy they're invited and they're getting any alcohol...lol

Re: rehearsal dinner costs
Every RD I've been to has basically just had the red and white wine on the tables and that has been fine. It's not really a get drunk occasion.

Re: rehearsal dinner costs
Since it's only about 28 people we decided to just go for it, our final cost pp with tax is somewhere around $60, including open bar. We figured it's kind of like a 'Thank you' dinner for the BP, parents, readers, etc. so we didn't want them to have to pay for their own drinks and I wouldn't really like it if I went to a dinner like that and there was no wine or anything like that available. It's a celebration, you'll be doing toasts, etc. so you want to at least have wine/champagne, IMHO
ETA: I also don't think that having wine on tables is cheap, I think that is totally acceptable. Bottom line, do what you can afford to do :)

Re: rehearsal dinner costs
You can bring own alcohol if the vendor allows it and just pay for the capping charge. This way your guests can have alcohol so you won't have to be stuck with a huge bar tab! Limit the drinks to wine/champagne or sparkling water. This way it gives your guests a bit of a variety without going overboard. The cocktails will definitely cost you at the restaurant. Just stick with the basics so you don't end up with an outrageous bill.

I think beer and wine is fine. Everyone should know that the wedding costs alone are expensive.

Re: rehearsal dinner costs
We are having 40 people at $30 a head, that includes unlimited wine, soda and water! I really did my homework with the RD. I called a million places until i found one that had everything, including cake and coffee, included.
But to answer you question, IMO i dont think it looks cheap to have bottles on the table and that's it. you do what you can afford, nothing more nothing less. These are your close friends and family, they aren't going to leave the place saying, can you believe they only had three bottles of wine!! Plus it's only dinner, it's not going to be a five hour event! Good luck, and congrats!

Re: rehearsal dinner costs
pricing places out by Riverhead by my venue since we will be sleeping over the night before. It's really more for my out of town family and other close relatives. I dont think my bridal party plans on sleeping out there the night before, so it's more of a relative event...if anyone has any suggestions by Riverhead (by the vineyards), please let me know. Thanks!

I went to a shower at the crossroads in baiting hollow and i was very nice in a private room, it was set up buffet style, its very close to riverhead, like 5 min. One of my favorite places in out there is copperage inn its very homey its also in Baiting hollow.

I dont think its cheap at all not to pay for your guests alcohol. I think your guests will understand. If they really want alcohol they can go the bar and purchase it themselves. I've gone to dinners like this and I had no problem nor did i take offense to having to purchase my own wine
