Religion Spin Off

Original post by cjb88

Do you guys think it is a huge issue to not give your children a religion when they are born and let them find it on their own?? (not have them baptised, christened or whatever)

I don't get what the point of being rude is. Did I say something wrong?

Mnay people celebrate Yule.I'm just saying people are saying oh, you can't have the tree and the giftds if you're not christian, that's so worng, it's about jesus. All of that stuff far predates Jesus. That's all I mean to say. Christians don't own it. It may be used to celebrate jesus' birth but that's not how it originated, so I don't see why people who don't believe in jesus can't have a yule tree..what does the tree have to do with jesus anyway?

mary...great googling by the way...but sorry i am just NOT buying it...People USE christmas to get together, exchange gifts, yadda yadda....I am not saying there is anything wrong with it...

BUT the average person is doing just that...using the holiday to celebrate....they aren't knowing the Wican/pagan meaning for anything...

BUT to say that you do not believe in a religion in which said holiday and its symbolism associated with...is wrong.!

But again MY OPINION

i know a lot of people that do this ...

I agree with you..I remember this topic on another board and I felt the same way. Its one thing to say you are wiccan (or someone who truly celebrates the solstice)...BUT....what you are saying here is that many people celebrate a holiday...go all and buy gifts, say 'merry christmas' and raise their kids to get all excited about christmas when in actuality lots of people don't go to mass...don't believe in the religion itself...and it is completely hypocritical.

How many families/people do you think are out there that wake up on christmas morning...exchange presents, get together with family because its winter solstice?? Probably none. AND if they do exist, they they wouldn't be incorporating christmas traditions into it.

Re: Religion Spin Off

I honestly don't care who celebrates xmas or yule and who goes ot church and who doesn't. I don't see why people feel the need to be judgemental and act like they own a holiday. Let people take from it what they will. The stuff people are adopting from Xmas has nothing to dow ith jesus and is something the christians themselves adopted, so I don't see how people can place limitations by sayng only if you believe in jesus and go to church this much, then it's ok to celebrate xmas. Christmas all by itself in secualr terms in commericalistic but there's nothing wrong with it. There's a happiness to the season, anda spirit of giving and thining of those less fortunate. I wouldn't mind if more people took on that attiude during december and all year round

That is absolutely my point.

heidla...in all honesty...PEOPLE ARE USING the holiday!
right or wrong that is for each to decide...

BUT the majority ARE doing just that!

I agree with you. People are using the holiday to gather with their families and celebrate. I guess I don't find that to be a horrible thing. I was not raised in a religion, but I knew why we as a Christian society celebrated Christmas.

tat's why I put umm in front of it. Tose are the best words I can use to describe it, and I think there are colleges that have majrs in comparative religions, etc, like comparative literature. I'd have to look it up. But anyway to be perfeclty clear what i meant was that I study religions avidly. Many religions and how they connect and divert and thier similar or distinct origins. It's just something I find fascinating.

EXACTLY!!!!
the majority of people are USING the holiday! NOT really following any pagan wiccan beliefs...

Google the meaning all you want mary imo it comes down to the reality that people want to celebrate Christmas..but say that they do not believe in a religion that it is commonly known for!

Heidla..if you are a pagan and wiccan...that is great and i mean no disrespect...i just do not find you to be the majority of people who celebrate the 25th of December

Re: Religion Spin Off

All Heidi wa saying was that the lat edecember holiday with the tree and the misteltoe and the gifts is not JUSt xmas...

And yeah I'm SO smart because i know how to google. there's no way I could possibly know this stuff on my own already.

I was being serious. I couldn understand what you mena if they say 'i am totally against jesus and everythign he stood for and I hate those christians' and they say the same for pagand and celebrate christmas, but if they are just not xian, there's a very big difference there..

you don't believe in, say buddhism, but that doens't necessarily mean you're against it

I was honestly asking you to clarify. Pardon me. Pardon me also for being well read. I never did anything to you, and my last comment was referring to your multiple comments about how I am a 'good Googler' iimplying that I didn't know any of this on my own. You're being biatchy to me for no reason. What did I do to you?

Mary you aren't WELL READ or at least we wouldn't know it by your posts...you google things...the majority of the facts that you post are GOOGLED...

AND TO BE QUITE HONEST...i like your posts and find some of it interesting but you have this HOLIER than thou attitude...This is SUPERIOR..way about you that you THINK you know more than MOST. AND YOU DO NOT.

I understand chiming in, maybe like this time and relaying some facts but in all honesty you OFTEN do it when you have NO IDEA what you are talking about and it is getting annoying!

Re: Religion Spin Off

i think what bothers people in particular is the fact that sometimes you come off as a 'know it all' I'm being very honest. not just with this thread, but with many other topics in general. I know you don't THINK you're a KIA, but that's how you come off sometimes. then it turns out that things stated on here are googled, or just read in a book. there's a difference in having the knowledge up there as opposed to just reading facts out of a book. I know - knowledge is power and how else can you gain that knowledge, but other than reading a book or studying....it just comes off as KIA sometimes that's all..
even you've said before yourself...you have an answer for EVERYTHING.
