Renting a car in Hawaii
Is it necessary? We are in Oahu and Maui. I definitely want to rent a car for at least one day in Oahu and a few days in Maui.
Should we rent one the entire stay?
Is a convertible necessary?
Thanks.

I have never been, but I have heard that you should have one the whole time. We are planning on renting one the entire time we are there when we finally get around to booking (but I have also heard it is very expensive).

Renting a car in Hawaii
It depends on what you want to do. I'm in Oahu three days and I know I want to go to Pearl Harbor which is about a $50-$60 cab ride. I'm only there three days so it's worth it to have the car the whole time, I think it came to $125 so it's the price of the cab ride. Now, we can explore the rest of the island while we are there. I've done Oahu with no car before, too. I'm just doing an economy car.For Maui - yes, get a car! And for this I suggest a convertible. The Road to Hana is amazing and it's all about sightseeing, so it's great to have the convertible. I got a tan in the convertible so I didn't feel guilty for not having a beach day which are always so important to me. Again, it depends on what you plan on doing for whether you need it the whole time or not. For me, I didn't want to deal with the hassle of returning it and wanted to keep my options open for exploring the island so I got it the whole time. I think it was only $450 for the week.

Re: Renting a car in Hawaii
When I went, I rented a car in Maui because we used it to get everywhere (restaurants, snorkeling, road to hana). It was definitely worth it.I did not rent a car in Oahu because they have a great bus system that we took everywhere. I was only there 2 days and it was perfect. Parking in Waikiki is a nightmare as well. HTH!

Re: Renting a car in Hawaii
Renting a car in Maui is a must!Oahu, it isn't absolutely necessary, but if you can afford it, it is nice. We rented one for a few days, but remember, parking is Oahu is expensive, so ask the hotel how much parking is.
HTH!
