My FH and I, along with another couple, were supposed to go camping this weekend at Robert Moses. The problem is that's it's going to be cool this weekend and since you can't set up tents or have an open fire, we'll freeze out butts off. Can anyone recomend anywhere else that lets you camp on the beach, pitch tents, and have an open fire? Also, do I need any kind of pass to be able to camp there? We have the fishing pass for Robert Moses, but that's it. We don't even live in LI, is that going to be a problem? Thanks for any help!
Try this link. Its from the Newsday Fun Book which I have at home but this is the online one. Maybe it will help.Fun Book

Re: Repost from NWR- camping
I go camping at Short Beach. It is in the town of Smithtown and on the north shore. You do need a permit and I am not sure if you must be a Smithtown resident. It is really nice to camp there- tents, fires, bbq's, beach volleyball, plus you can drive the boats/jetskis right on to the beach there.

Thanks! I looked into Short Beach and it's only for Smithtown residents.

Try Hither Hills.... you don't camp right on the beach, but the beach is on the other side of the dunes, so you hear it and can easily walk over and see it.
