REPOST: To all of you who blame only TWU for this strike

Original post by Bride2B_2006

I'm not happy about the strike because my sister works for transit and it is hurting her and she may be subject to ridiculous fines simply because she won't go against her union.

Everyone seems to be blaming the union, but there is more to every story than meets the eye. MTA is also to blame for this strike. It has absolutely no respect for its employees.

A few weeks ago, the MTA announced that it had a billion dollar surplus. MTA KNEW that the union contract would expire around Christmas. But, instead of using that money for its employers, it decided to waste the money on a limited amount of riders. At most, this 'free ride scam' save the people who were actually able to get one of those special 41 day Metro cards about $25.

A measly $25 dollars. It was the biggest waste of 150 - 200 million dollars that I have ever seen.

Do know anyone who actual bought one of these cards?

Wouldn't you rather have no strike at all than save a measly $25?

The MTA could have used that surplus to increase the salaries of its employees.

Or it could have given its employees a bonus.

It chose to do neither.

In 2005, some unions have obtained solid raises. For example, the sanitation workers have gotten a 17 percent raise over 51 months and the police contract includes a 10.25 percent raise over two years.

The MTA is (at least) $30,000,000 per day money making machine. Yet, the most that it can muster is a 12% raise only if new employees contribute 6% of their check to their health insurance. That's almost no raise at all.

Did you know that as an MTA employee you have to request a day off at least 30 days in advance?

How many of us know that we're going to need a day off a month ahead of time?

Did you know that MTA employees have to stand on line to get a holiday like Thanksgiving off the same way we might stand in line for a concert ticket?

Did you know that some of the bathrooms that some of the female employees have to use have no heat and rats running through them?

Again, I'm not happy about the strike, but I understand the reasons behind it.

The union could have waited to strike until after the New Year, at least. It STILL would have impacted the commuters, it still would have made 'a point'. To do it now, when NYC tourism is key....really, from a PR standpoint, is just LOUSY. I don't really think there's a good way to make the union look good right now (despite the fact they may have valid points).

In the end, it just supports my sentiment that we should all just ride bicycles more!

Edited for grammar.

It is disgusting what they are doing and I am happy they are being fined..and they are azz's for staying out knowing that they are being fined! I say fire all them and see how happy they will be on welfare!

this entire situation pisses me off!

If you can't go to work because your depot is closed how are you an azz
I know I wish my fiancee was at work right now but he can't be.
I think you are an azz for making that coment.

I understand you are upset, but you shouldn't have said that. I am sure your fh's supervisors are at work, since they are non union. they have to report SOMEWHERE- the union is not letting them work, not the MTA. if he's against it, there has to be somewhere he can report. my uncle is sitting at his cable yard right now (he's a non-union supervisor WORKING right now) if you like, I can find out for you where he can go and report to.

we are all in this together.

UPDATE: there ARE NO MTA FACILITIES THAT ARE CLOSED. MY UNCLE HAS 10 OF HIS MEN WORKING AND HE JUST TOLD ME THAT WHOEVER WANTS TO REPORT TO WORK CAN. ALL SUPERVISORS ARE AT EVERY DEPOT AND YARD, AND NONE OF THEM ARE CLOSED.

the bold is just to be clear. not yelling, but tell your fh he CAN go to work and avoid being penalized.

I have a question.

If this is all becoming a sticky subject and starting such a big debate, why can it not be dropped from the board? Everyone has said their piece, time to keep it moving...

From NY1's coverage of the strike:

'While many transit workers continue to walk the picket lines, one high ranking transit official says some of its members are crossing the lines. In an exclusive interview with NY1's Bobby Cuza, the head of New York City Transit says over 1,000 employees decided to come to work Tuesday.

While it isn't enough people to re-open the city's bus and train routes, he said the employees who came to work are being kept busy.

'Well, we're doing a little cleaning and a little paperwork, and we're making sure that we keep them in a safe, secure location,” said NYC Transit President Lawrence Reuter. “And we're making sure that we're paying them for coming to work and showing their dedication to the customers and the passengers of this city. We really do appreciate that. We think it's a great effort on their part, and we're going to do everything to make sure these people are taken care of.' '

I must say that these people crossing the line have my full support.

Editted to agree with the above post and will drop my opinion portion.

Good info to post Jessica. But just to add that was a rude comment for Bella to make. But very big, and sincere of her to edit her post to explain 'who' she was referring to, and they both corrected their differences

I don't think it was rude really..IMO..she was heated over this strike just like the rest of us are..she edited her post to refer to who she meant. We all say things when we get pissed. The bottom line is these people CAN go to work. And yes I know what I'm talking about because my father works for the MTA.

I am not out to hurt anyones feelings and I also didnt personally attack anyone on this site either... I edited my post to clarify who I was referring to. I am sorry for all the innocent MTA employees/families who are affected by this strike and more so for all the commuters..But to the employees who are on the front line..they had to know that there would be consequences.

But it seems that employees who want to go back to work CAN..which is great news for them and the families...

I agree they all should be FIRED.

If I was a union employee right now I would be so pissed. I mean just the numbers would get me upset. After they pay all these fines and the union will of course have to raise their fees to pay off all the fines they are being charged for striking the raises and what ever else they may end up getting will add up to nothing.

my 2 cents...

if I worked for a company that was unionized and I had to pay union dues so that they can reflect MY wishes and they decided to strike causing me to lose major $$, I would cross the picket line.

I'm very sorry, but some of the TWU's demands are REDICULOUS! I have not seen any raise in YEARS that compares to what the MTA offered them. I also do not have a full pension when I retire. And as stated on the news, it is not legal for the TWU to add the terms of the pension to the conditions of the strike... not to mention the strike is ILLEGAL in the first place.

my question is this... if this is illegal, shouldn't they start arresting some people? IMO, if you break the law, you get arrested. period.

and PS: boo hoo regarding dirty bathrooms. you don't take a job and then use dirty bathrooms as justification for striking!
