Thank you for posting!

FH keeps telling me we won't have anyone at our wedding because it's right after X-mas and because of the economy. Guess i should show him the article.

i was a little worried about that too. I think that's part of the reason some OOT guests can't come. Not only the expense of traveling, but it's also right after Christmas. My guest list looks like it's going to be pretty full tho. I just hope we don't end up with no gifts at all due to the economy & Christmas & all that. That wouldn't be pleasant.

I think it's funny too that he mentioned brides now getting their bouquets at Stop & Shop. I sooo did my flowers there also! It's not as expensive as a florist and they do a beautiful job, so why not? lol.

You know, the last quote in the article really is strange and kinda pissses me off:

'Maybe some people are concerned about their jobs and giving gifts,' Cocchi said, 'but I think most people, when it comes to a wedding, realize that the importance of the date has to supersede something as superficial as money.'

Um, hello, money isn't superficial. You either have it or you don't. I know we are all hoping that the economy doesn't change the $$ we get in gifts, but it may for some of us, and if a friend of mine is having a hard time, I really hope she doesn't give me more than she can afford. The quote seems to say, hey, give anyway, it's a wedding for pete's sake! Well, I just don't feel that way. In the weddings I am going to next year, I'll give what I can reasonably - but if I don't have enough for what is considered a nice gift, I'm not going to go into debt for it - I'll give what I can. Yes, the event is very important, but I'm not gonna get a cash advance on my cc to give a gift..... just my two cents ....

I agree...I definitely had the same feeling about that last quote. The thing that seems annoying too when it comes to that quote is that money is what you need to buy a house and that's no easy feat right now either. That quote almost makes it sound to the bride and groom like 'hey spend it, it's your wedding' when the reality is especially now that you probably won't get back all that you spent. That ending left a bad taste in my mouth.

hmmm interesting take on it. I actually thought the opposite when I read it. I saw it as even if you dont have alot to give just go and give what you can. Dont miss out on the most important day in somebodies life just bc you dont have as much as you would like to give. That money shouldn't stop you from missing out on an event. Not that you should give more than you want to. And that your presence is more important to the couple than the amount you give them.

I have no idea what the author of the article meant but thats what I thought when I read it and thought 'what a great last quote' hahaha

I didn't think of it like that Denise but now I see what you are saying. I was so glad that our friend was able to be the best man in our wedding- he works in North Dakota (crazy difference in salary and cost of living than here) and it was so much money to fly home and get the tux, the bach party, etc. and he still managed to put money in the card. I am just so glad that he was able to be there to share our day with us. He happens to be how dh and I met so it was really special that he was there. I would never want any of our friends to think that we didn't want them to come just because they couldn't afford to cover their plate, especially not him. Good point Denise.

Wow those comments on the article are nuts!

people get a bit nasty...

i do hope people realize they should spend what they can afford and dont go into debt for their wedding (as the host or the guest). cuz its not about how much $ u are spending...its the celebration of your union

My wedding cost close to $50,000 of my father's hard earned money. It ended 20 months later. I still regret it and apologize to my father just about everytime it's brought up. However people do still talk about it and it was a great time, but looking back I wish it was still in my fathers pocket and not out the window!

You are what is wrong with America today! You spend 50K of your dad's money and less than 2 years later, its over? You should get a second, third and fourth job if necessary to pay him back. You are a loser with a capital L!
