Ring Advice - Types of Gold Metals

Ring Advice - Types of Gold Metals

I am just looking to see what everyone's thoughts are on this. My e-ring is a solitaire with 14k White Gold band and Platinum prongs. Over the course of this past year, I've noticed the White Gold is starting to look a little yellow. We brought the ring down to the jeweler for its bi-annual check-up and talked about our options.

The woman explained that White Gold would need to be redipped and also, when they buff out scratches, the ring will lose a small amount metal. So we talked about getting the band Platitum and it would cost approx. $500 to do. Also, I don't know if I would want to give up something FH gave me just to upgrade. A part of me feels like it won't be the same since it won't be the original ring he proposed with. FH doesn't seem to mind and is actually encouraging me to get Platinum (and then eventually Platinum wedding ring). He said it would be easier to maintain and Platinum wouldn't lose metal when buffed out. I don't know what to do.

Also, we were looking at some rings for him and he tried on a Palladium ring. The woman explained that it's very similar to Platinum except for the price (The Palladium ring was $750, Platinum would have been $2,000). I've been looking on the boards to get some info on Palladium but there hasn't been any recent posts about it. Is the maintenance easier than White Gold?

Thanks for reading.

MY FH just also got paladium..well on order.
The only thing I don't like about this is that it can never, ever be resized.

Palladium can NEVER be resized? hmm... maybe we should stick with the white gold then...

Can platinum be resized??

Platinum can be resized. Just know that platinum is softer then gold so over time the bottom of the band will flatten out.

As far as the white gold losing a layer of metal, this is true but it takes MANY years for this to happen. most likely in your lifetime it will never be an issue.

Ive had my ring for almost 4 years and its been dipped 4 times, the bottom of the band is very skinny and there is no noticeable difference. If you are really not feeling getting rid of the ring he proposed with then dont. The yellowing is totally normal and like I said is not an issue you really have to worry about. You would have to dip it ALOT and often for it to break thru.

$2K for a platinum ring? Did this have jewels in it or something? We're going to Tiffany's today to get us platinum bands and FH's is going to be $1350 and mine is going to be $900. Might be worth looking in to.

Re: Ring Advice - Types of Gold Metals

i have the same problem with my white gold and honestly I think it is B/S, if i knew this we would of picked out a plat. ring. So DH and I discussed it and he is fine with me getting a new setting and even adding a stone we just received as a part of my grandfather's estate. I realize you don't want to change because you feel it will drop its sentimental value, i had the same issues, but typically the men feel differently and as long as your fh is fine with it- go for it.

As far as a wedding band, those are pricey unless they have multi diamonds or something in it. Deff. can find cheaper.

Thanks for the info.

Btw, yes, the ring FH tried on had diamonds... maybe we got some info mixed up but plat. would definitely have been more $$$.

We still have about 11 months to decide. I'm going to do research and go to different jewelers to ask around.

Thanks again though.

FYI white gold yellows, platinum is more prone to scratches. Both need some kind of maintenance.

There is also titanium, an even cheeper option. Its a bit grayer than platinum but very durable and can't be resized by traditional methods.

I heard the same...that platinum is a lot softer and will scratch. I guess there are pros and cons to both. My friend has gotten her white gold rings dipped. I never heard anything about them thinning but, I guess most do over time.
