Ring Poll...which would you rather have

Ring Poll...which would you rather have

I am wondering if most girls would rather have a normal size ring that is near colorless, with little imperfections.....or a bigger rock.

Can you really tell the different between a VS1 and VVS1? OR F vs H in color. Hmmmm I am not a diamond expert but just feel like hearing what everone has to say!

Mine is pretty good color and clarity and unless I hold it up to a crappy one....who would know?!?! I also keep my ring very clean and some people have actuallycommented that they can tell it is good clarity/etc. I am appreciative that FH took so much time to pick out this beauty!

honestly i could care less either way..carats, clarity, color, blah blah..what means more is what the ring symbolizes..it could have been I3 clarity z in color and it wouldn't of mattered..id love him the same

I was part of the shopping process and I made sure that I was very clear when it came to this. I would totally rather have a smaller perfect gorgeous diamond than a big ole yellow spotted diamond!!

I would def rather the better quality. It may not be noticeable at first, but I have heard that over the years, the inclusions in the diamond can start to discolor and you will then be able to notice the imperfections. Especially if your diamond is exposed to water (i.e, swimming, dishwashing, showering).
Some people see a big ring and get all 'OMG' but that doesnt necessarily mean that its worth as much as a smaller one.

Absolutley!!! It's def the commitment that a ring symbolizes not the price tag (unless of course you are gonna wear the tag on the ring ).

Re: Ring Poll...which would you rather have

Obviously I wouldn't turn down either if it came from my FH, but I do know a decent amount about diamonds. We did research together.

I personally care more about what you can see. i have a pretty good eye with respect to color, and can tell the difference between G and H, H and I, etc. However, as long as the stone is eye-clean i dont really care if it has small inclusions (so to me, id rather have a bigger vs1 than a smaller vvs1 since you can't see the inclusions anyway). unless it's internally flawless it's going to have them, so as long as I can't see them I'm more willing to be flexible in that area. I think cut is the most important (an excellent cut stone looks bigger, whiter and sparkles more).

to me it goes cut (get the best there is), color (get something that looks white to you), clarity (get one without visible inclusions) and then carat. However, that's just my personal opinion, and i'm sure some people disagree.

Bring on the drama!

to be honest.. i dont have a clue what a good diamond is.. the 4 C's or whatever that is.. i could care less.. it could have been a fake for all i know.. i still could be.. i didnt ask ?'s when i got. it either.. people ask me what the total weight is. and i really dont have a true answers.. all i know is that when the sun hits it just right it sparkels and thats all that matters!! i think people get way to caught up in the whole 'ring' thing and forget the meaning some times.. thats JMO

I get so confused on the whole Cut Clarity etc thing. What is the cut again?

lol totally! I told fh i didn't care what ring i got..cause to me it didn't matter...i already had the most important thing of all..his love

and its funny talking about the so called 'worth more' being this way..blah blah..thats only important if you were thinking of selling it or something..I would hope you would have the ring the rest of your life because of the commitment it symbolizes..i never understood that concept of 'worth more'

Yeah I guess that is prob not the best term to use. I think that everyone's e-ring is invaluable to them.

ETA - I waited over 10 years for my 'symbol of love' so mine could have came from a cracker jack box and I would have been DELIGHTED

Maybe the comment 'normal size' will? What's normal to me may be huge to someone else, and vice versa ....

A lot of people confuse cut with shape, but cut really refers to the proportions of how the stone is cut. If it's too shallow or too deep or if the table (the top flat surface) is too big or small it affects the way light is reflected. This in turn affects how white it looks, how much it sparkles, etc.

Here is more info on cut

When you get to fancy shapes it's more complicated because there isnt the same standard 'ideal' cut. There is a little more for princess than other shapes, but in most cases you either have to learn alot about the different proportions or just see the stone in person.

also, the importance of the 4 Cs varies by shape. an emerald cut diamond has less facets and you can see imperfections more easily, so you need a higher level of clarity to be eye-clean

hope this helps

these videos are really helpful to show how different factors can affect what a stone looks like.
