I was just at an orthodox wedding last weekend and I noticed they weren't handing them out. I'm having a reform ceremony, do I still need to buy them or do people not use them anymore?
If you haven't noticed I haven't been to temple in YEARS!

I'm surprised, I went to an orthodox wedding last year and they had them by the door on the way in in a little bin. This wedding wasn't at a temple so that might be why.
I don't think its necessary for reform though. We're not doing that. I think i'm going to have to figure out the yarmulka (sp) however. We're not having the ceremony at the temple so I'm not sure where you'd get them from.

i'm not sure where to get them either, but we the kutuba (sp) and everything else, i'm sure we'll come across them. we're interfaith and i'm still choosing what we take from both religons!

Thanks! There is so much to learn.... Is it a female yamukah (sp) then?
Can you ask your SIL for some info for me, the classes my Rabbi suggested are on the Upper East Side,
I don't think you need to have them....Granted I haven't been to Synagogue in a looong time either, but not one of the wedding's I've been to (or in) have offered them. I'd just go with the regular kippot...My conservadox Rabbi told us that we don't need to have them, so we're definitely not getting them. We're just ordering ivory kippot, and we figure both men and women can wear them if they like.

Re: RP: Dolies for Jewish Weddings
I got married in a reform synagogue. We did not have them. They are used in worship to distinguish married women from unmarried women. Since a wedding is not a service of worship, I think you are safe.
I think they are used more for the Conservative movement similarly to the way that the Orthodox community uses wigs or hats to demonstrate modesty. Once an Orthodox woman becomes married, she is not to show her hair in public so she uses a wig. Hair is considered a sign of sexuality, and a woman is not to be sexual toward anyone but her husband.

I think those that are in the wedding party need them but best to ask the rabbi.

Since you are having a reform ceremony you do not need to have them, no.

Wow, I didn't even think of these!!! Thanks for asking the question Diana.
I'm gonna have to ask my mom (her father was a Rabbi).
