my cousins and dh went to s. hunt. and dh swears that if we live in s. hunt and have kids, they're going to catholic school and he's jewish. basically, he does not think highly of it. but my personal opinion. you get what you make of it. you can go to the best district and still fail out or go to school in the ghetto and make your way into harvard. you get what you give. but as far as safety...this is where he has issues.

if you do a search on this board, you will find many threads on this topic

south huntington elementary schools are just fine. yes, the high school isn't the best on Long Island in terms of 'safety' but from what I hear about what goes on in so-called 'good schools' (like dix hills), it's really not that much worse
