The one thing I'm not really looking forward to is changing my name. I know I don't have to change my name, or I can hyphenate it, but I like the idea of having the same name as FH. He has a very nice easy to spell and pronounce last name, and it will get rid of my horrible initials but I really like my name. FH really really wants me to take his name and I'm 95% sure I will, but I feel like I'm losing a part of my identity.
Anyone else feel the same way? What can I do to feel better?
Plus, I have a very uncommon last name. Ex: if I go on facebook, virtually everyone with my last name is a relative of mine. If I type in my name with FH's last name there are like 10,000 people. (I have a very common first name). Plus, FH's brother is dating a girl with my first name, so if they get married one day we'll have the same first and last name.

Re: Sad about changing your name?
I just found out that my brother's friend and his wife (who got married last year) are now creating a new name which is a combo of their names and both changing their last name to that....their names were Johnson and Martin, and now they will both be Mason....kind of weird but I guess whatever makes you happy!!

Re: Sad about changing your name?
I love my last name...but its kinda long and has an apostrophe and people always spell it wrong.
Plus FH's last name is really nice, short and Italian and I think it makes my name sound like a famous person's name (probably because famous people do have it)

I've posted this before also, and I think most girls on here are thrilled to take their FH's last name. I wish I felt that way, but I don't and I can't help it (and have even felt like something is wrong with me).
I am keeping my name for professional purposes. And legally I will probably change my n ame to have both last names - no hyphen. Socially I will go by 'Mrs. FH's last name'. Sounds complicated, but I'm mentally hung up on this. I want my last name, I am so proud of it and my family background.
I 100% agree with you and I plan on doing the exact same complicated thing! lol Guess I will have a few identities

Re: Sad about changing your name?
sorry not giving mine up.
I'm using my maiden professionally since I work for a huge bureaucracy and my clients need to be able to reach me easily. I'll use FH's last name alone socially but legally i'm tacking that baby on the end of my name w/ no hypen.
My name is part of me I don't have to lose that to be FH's wife. He had a minor issue w/ it at first but after my DAD told him to get w/ the times he reconsidered and is ok with it now.

Re: Sad about changing your name?
I, too, am hesitant about changing my name. I suggested that we both change it to a slight variation of his name, but he resists every time.
One of the things I love about my last name is that it has an ending (-atos) that identifies me immediately as coming from a specific island in Greece; FH's mother is also from this island and he's much closer to his mother's side of the family (he barely knows any of his father's relatives beyond his aunts and uncles), so I suggested that we add on -atos to the end of his name. That way, he, too, can also be identified as coming from that island.
He keeps resisting, and it makes me sadder and sadder...

The way I see it, right now I jsut have my fathers name. To me, that is still like being a little girl. Growing up will be taking on a new last name and creating a new family.
this is how i feel about it too... i am excited to have a new name.

I can understand how you feel. I will most likely be changing mine. I doubt I will hyphenate it but I can definitely see why you are bothered by it.

Re: Sad about changing your name?
i have a really unique, italian last name and i love it! FH has a very common last name, Becker, so I'm not too excited to change it. He said he wouldn't mind if i hyphenated it but it sounds really weird.

My friend told me that they asked her, not only what she wanted her last name to be, but what she wanted her first name to be too!

Re: Sad about changing your name?
I am happy to change my name b/c I feel that we are truly a family, so I want us to have the same last name. I never thought that I would feel that way though, so I understand where everyone else is coming from.

Re: Sad about changing your name?
I dont want to change my name. I told FH I would hyphenate it but my full name would be 24 letters long w/o out my middle name
I asked him to take my last name but he said no but he said the kids can have my last name woo hoo
