The one thing I'm not really looking forward to is changing my name. I know I don't have to change my name, or I can hyphenate it, but I like the idea of having the same name as FH. He has a very nice easy to spell and pronounce last name, and it will get rid of my horrible initials but I really like my name. FH really really wants me to take his name and I'm 95% sure I will, but I feel like I'm losing a part of my identity.
Anyone else feel the same way? What can I do to feel better?
Plus, I have a very uncommon last name. Ex: if I go on facebook, virtually everyone with my last name is a relative of mine. If I type in my name with FH's last name there are like 10,000 people. (I have a very common first name). Plus, FH's brother is dating a girl with my first name, so if they get married one day we'll have the same first and last name.

awe. I've seen so many girls on this site struggling with getting rid of their maiden name. For me, I am happy to lose mine, BUT, I can see where you are coming from. It's like you are losing some of your sense of self.
It will definitely take some getting used to, but think of how great it will feel to know it is another way the two of you are binded together.
I know nothing anyone will say will make the situation better, and if you really do have a hard time with it when the time comes, you can always hyphenate, then you don't really lose your maiden name.

I've posted this before also, and I think most girls on here are thrilled to take their FH's last name. I wish I felt that way, but I don't and I can't help it (and have even felt like something is wrong with me).
I am keeping my name for professional purposes. And legally I will probably change my n ame to have both last names - no hyphen. Socially I will go by 'Mrs. FH's last name'. Sounds complicated, but I'm mentally hung up on this. I want my last name, I am so proud of it and my family background.

I feel the same way about changing my name. I've always been excited about it, but ever since my father passed away I feel like I will be losing not only my identity, but a part of him as well. FH REALLY wants me to change and I'm pretty sure I will. I was thinking of just adding his name to the end of mine and then I should be able to use either name. Probably my maiden name for work purposes (because of licenses) and FH's name for social, mail, etc...
We shall see I guess! Plus, my last name is only 6 letters though sometimes hard to pronounce. FH's last name is 13 letters!!!

I hear what you're saying...FH's last name is also very common, and mine, not so much...our first names are very similar too (nick & nicole) so our names are just going to be so cutesy once I change my last name haha....and professionally I feel like it will be complicated, especially with references, and changing jobs probably soon....but, I know I want to do it, so I will just have to get used to it!

i dont mind changing names - its just i dont like the fact that my last name will be mulligan and i am NOT irish and NEITHER IS FH!!! i dont even get it! he's more italian than me - and i have to give up my super italian name and change it to mulligan
and i dont think Nicole Mulligan sounds right.......but i think its sweet to take his last name and i am secretly a little excited about it - even though i don't particularly care for it - or the sound of my new name.....Nicole Marie Mulligan sounds a little better - but Nicole Mulligan - just sounds so BLAH to me!

I dont like FH's last name. But i am still taking it.
I dont feel like I'm losing my identity, though.
The way I see it, right now I jsut have my fathers name. To me, that is still like being a little girl. Growing up will be taking on a new last name and creating a new family.

I mean I kinda like my last name a little bit more because FH's last name is Florea (It's romanian not spanish) but my last name now is Barclay (nice and Irish/English) so it is weird to hear Catie Florea. But I am still excited.
But me and FH will have the same exact initials! His name is Chris

I will too, and I am not sure how I feel about that... yet. When I think of getting things that say 'Mrs. C' on them I think of her. It's sometimes creepy.

I do'nt love my FH's last name...its a really tough spelling and everyoen always screws it up...I don't think I am ready to have everyone screw up my last name...the good thing is that I work for my dad and our last name is in the company name, and therefore I need to keep my maiden name for work purposes, so at least I will have it for there. Other then that it will take some getting used to. I think it hurts my dad to know my name will change...he always jokes that my dog will have a new last name..he is upset with that! lol

Forever I looked forward to the day I could change my last name ... I swear I would marry someone named Anderson, Brown, Connors, Blake, something nice and easy. I have a four syllable last name.
Well, I'm marrying a guy with a last name most people can't pronounce. I DETEST his dad and do not want to be linked to him. I wish FH had changed his name to his Mom's name, though I don't like her name much either. Ouch.
He had joked about changing his name to MINE and I was so excited then he said his dad would be very upset if he did that. I actually knew a guy who did that. He hated his Jewish last name and changed it to his generic wife's name. I loved that he did that - so different!

I really don't want to change my name at all - it's my name, why should I be the one to have to change it? FH is all for me hyphenating, but I'm not crazy about it, but if I hyphenate, our kids will also be hyphenated, so that's the only reason why I may do it. Or I may just completely change it cause I like short names. I still have 3 1/2 months to decide, but I'm truly torn as to what to do.
