Sad about changing your name?

Original post by bluegreen08

The one thing I'm not really looking forward to is changing my name. I know I don't have to change my name, or I can hyphenate it, but I like the idea of having the same name as FH. He has a very nice easy to spell and pronounce last name, and it will get rid of my horrible initials but I really like my name. FH really really wants me to take his name and I'm 95% sure I will, but I feel like I'm losing a part of my identity.

Anyone else feel the same way? What can I do to feel better?

Plus, I have a very uncommon last name. Ex: if I go on facebook, virtually everyone with my last name is a relative of mine. If I type in my name with FH's last name there are like 10,000 people. (I have a very common first name). Plus, FH's brother is dating a girl with my first name, so if they get married one day we'll have the same first and last name.

I'm really sorry to change my last name. It's very important to FH - so I will though. I am going to make my last name now my middle name...

Keeping my last name. I am known professionally by my name and will keep it. When the time comes, if we are lucky enough to have children, then I will think more seriously about changing my name.

I am very traditional so I never gave changing my last name a second thought.

I am giving up one last name that ends in a vowel to another last name that ends in a different vowel!!!!!!

I feel the same way about changing my name. I've always been excited about it, but ever since my father passed away I feel like I will be losing not only my identity, but a part of him as well. FH REALLY wants me to change and I'm pretty sure I will. I was thinking of just adding his name to the end of mine and then I should be able to use either name. Probably my maiden name for work purposes (because of licenses) and FH's name for social, mail, etc...

We shall see I guess! Plus, my last name is only 6 letters though sometimes hard to pronounce. FH's last name is 13 letters!!!

I know what you mean about losing part of your identity because my father is not with me either. Although I will take my FH's last name, I will have my maiden name (dad's name) made into a tatoo and have it on me always.

My last name is terrible. No one can say it or spell it, ever. It rhymes with too many things and in elementary school I was tortured

So I cannot WAIT to take FH's last name - Booth. Simple, easy to say and spell. The worst we get is when we go to a restaurant, and we give 'Booth' as the last name, sometimes they think we are asking for a booth. So I will say, 'Last name is Booth' just to clarify.

I'm not happy about changing my name from Blake...so generic and easy to Leiboff... but since it means so much to FH I'm coming to terms with it.

I am going to use my name professionally until I am ready to change it.. but I did decide that my last name will be our first daughters middle name... I think Costigan works as a middle name!! I hate that no one will know I am irish anymore!!!! I look greek/italian and I am getting a real Italian last name... oh well..

Re: Sad about changing your name?

i don't mind getting rid of my name, but I personally can't adjust to being called Mrs. **** because that is how I refer to his mom, it's weird that that is what people will be calling ME. Some vendors have already mixed up our names and have called saying 'can i speak to Mrs. ***' i'm like

I'm debating hyphenating, but FH will be insulted. I don't want to hurt his feelings, but i feel like a part of me is gone if i throw away my last name

I feel the same way. It does feel like you lose your identity because you are chaning your name but I'm sure after awhile it grows on you.

A friend of mine had every intention of changing her name but hadn't gotten around to it until she had a baby. I guess starting a family makes you change your views of the whole name change dilema.

Im not looking forward to changing it at all..im actually thinking of hypenating it..

FH has a very very common Hispanic last name..mine is an Italian last name, but its uncommon......

ive had it for so long its grown on me lol...i really dont think I can have that common last name that i know already about 809999 people that have it

HAHAHA me too...my FH's current gf has my name (along with the rest of america).

But i love my last name...it translates to king or emperor...so it's kind of powerful. I'm just making that my middle name.

We have the same first name so it's not surprising...

I dont particularly like my last name, but I really dont like FH's last name b/c it rhymes w/ my first name. I might keep both, no hyphen.

i can understand where you're coming from - but personally i'm really excited about changing my last name!

I feel the same way. I understand where some of you ladies are coming from. We have had this last name our entire lives and it's going to be a relatively decent adjustment considering we've identified with this name for so long. But, I'm really excited to share my FH's last name-I think it will make me feel even more like we're a whole piece! Does that make sense? On the other hand, I understand why woman who use their name for work purposes, wouldn't want to change their name. My mom hypenated her maiden with her married name. I'm a teacher .... so changing my name won't make a big difference.

I'm really confused... Your FH has a current girlfriend? Does this bother you?

I am excited and honored to take FH's last name. Then again my last name is Rodriguez so it's so very common, not like it's something unique that ties me to my family because its the most common hispanis last name. besides i have a half brother who has fathers last name to carry on the family name and I am the last hope to carry on the alberti name so I take it with great honor. does help that I like his last name too. Melody Ann Alberti doesn't sound too bad.

I was thinking of doing something like that too. I'm very excited to take FH's last name *(because we will share the same name and because I actually really like his last name with my first) But my dad is deceased too and part of me feels bad letting go of his last name. But I know that had he been here, he would have wanted me to take my FH's last name. I think a small tat or something else to remember him is a nice gesture.
