Im sorry to hear this.

Well, my grandfather has type 2 and he really does great and takes good care of himself, that is key. Def read up on it to educate yourself and help fh. try this page from diabetes.org http://www.diabetes.org/type-2-diabetes.jsp

Mildred, im sorry about your FH
my thoughts are with you, this is awful news, but i hope he remains well and is okay.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use sugar. Sugar is the basic fuel for the cells in the body, and insulin takes the sugar from the blood into the cells. When glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, it can cause two problems:

Right away, your cells may be starved for energy.
Over time, high blood glucose levels may hurt your eyes, kidneys, nerves or heart.
Finding out you have diabetes is scary. But don't panic. Type 2 diabetes is serious, but people with diabetes can live long, healthy, happy lives.

theyre are plenty of resoruces on the internet to learn more about this type of diabetes. dont panic and be nervous, just take good care of him!

so sorry to hear that....

I don't know too much about diabetes, but I do know type 2 is much easier to manage than type 1. some times, if a person avoids breads and sugary things, they may not even need insulin. (My grand aunt had type 2 and she lived to age 86, and in her 80's was still very healthy, mobile, and independent.)

He does have to be much more careful about his diet, though. If he's careful, he will likely have no side effects, and will live a very long and healthy life. If he is bad, and doesn't exercise, and eats lots of carbs, he can get many serious side effects. So basically, nutrasweet and veggies are his friends, cake his enemy....

there's a diabetes website you can read, that likely will calm your nerves. it tells you EVERYTHING. (My BM's boyfriend has type 1, so I've surfed that site a lot to help her understand his disease.)

hope this helps... It will be overwhelming at first, but it will be a minor nuissance once he's used to his new routine.

sorry to hear that Millie -- I know my FMIL has type 2 diabetes and she is able to monitor it through diet. did his doctor recommend a diet, or a nutritionist to help him with changing his diet?

Re: sad news

im really sorry for the bad news but im glad your FH wasnt devastated when he found out about it, its actually better that he didnt freak out, a positive attitude is to good to have when it comes to things like this, and if he adapts different eating habits (minimum sugar diet) and takes medication this is something that he will be able to control.

Actually type 2 Diabetes can be regulated with medicine at first. My dad had it and was able to stop the medicine with diet and excersize. He lost some weight and feels better than ever. Your FH will be fine, it's just his body telling him he needs a change. everything will be fine, just do everything the doc tells him. GL

Same for my dad. He's been able to keep his blood sugar levels down by regulating his diet, removing all granular sugar from his food (he's switched to Splenda), and exercising. It takes a little getting used to, but you barely notice after a while. Your FH is going to be fine. We're here for you though if you need us!

Re: sad news

i agree with the above posters. my dad's had type 2 for 11 years and is still in denial about it. the good news is it's reversable. with a good diet his insulin level can go back to normal. but it's very important he follow one. also...he must take his medicine the same time everyday and with food. skipping a meal or the medicine is not good.

i know it's hard to get a man to eat right, but when they see it as a health and not a vanity issue, maybe they'll eventually listen. im still waiting for my dad to wake his. his father died at 58 from type 2 diabetes cause he was too stubborn to eat right. and my dad is 53. so im crossing my fingers.

good luck! and even if he hates it...get on his case about his medicine and what he eats. it will help him!
