It will be ok. Type II is manageable, especially with diet. My mom had it.
If he will need to check his blood sugar on a regular basis, get a machine that lets you test on the arm or on the side of the finger. Too much pricking on the finger tips eventually numbs the nerves, so the sense of touch becomes less sharp. The arm also is less painful.

A good endocrinologist can help with diabetes info, and a nutritionist can help outline a daily diet.

I'm so sorry, I know exactly how you feel. When my sister was diagnosed with Type 1, I was so scared. I can only imagine how SHE felt! When you're not familiar with a disease, it's quite scary. But like the girls said, Type II is much easier to manage. My sister can never reverse her diabetes unfortunately. It'll be tough at first for your FH but he will be able to adjust over time! Lots of to you!!

There is a ton of stuff out there for diabetics. Back in my days in grad school, I conducting studies in diabetes. I'm not a pro, but there is a TON of info out there for you and FH. My dad and uncle have it. It's tough at first, but he'll get used to it. Lot's of times, it can be controlled by a good diet and excerise. It's really manageable, just has to take care of himself a little more. He'll be fine!!!

Did the doctor refer him to a nutritionist? There are a bunch of Diabetes Learning Centers around LI too. Check for them near hospitals.

Here's a start. Good Luck!
