I just got a new job...I start in 2 weeks and I'll be making $55k. I was making $40k before and according to most recruiters I have worked with, I was WAYYYYYYYYYY underpaid for my experience.
Good luck finding a new job...if you decide thats what you want to do!

Re: Salary....
I am so jealous....
I make crap. I just changed careers and am taking Paralegal classes. I just started working in a law firm making less than I made working in daycare. I guess that's what happens when you don't know what you want to do... I hope once I finish these classes that I'll be able to get a 'real' job as opposed to 'Copy/File Clerk.' And to think I went to a very good 4 year college just to make peanuts It makes me wonder if it was worth it...

Re: Salary....
I gotta say one thing. If I can make ends meet with my salary and have a net worth pretty high- I think anyone making over 100K CAN afford a house. I am not trying to point my finger here but when people are making a combined salary of over 100K- you CAN make ends meet- it's just a matter of spending OR saving. If one's priority is driving a brand new car every two years- it's going to be a HUGE problem to have a roof over one's head, IMO. That's the problem with people not being able to afford things- especially in LI. I see it all the time. People that make 100K a year with no money in savings and they drive Caddys or BMW's- they don't have a pot to pi$$ in. Then they come to us asking us for advise on how to manage money. First thing we say is STOP SPENDING more you can afford! I don't know why people are concerned with looking 'rich'. Oh well.

FH and I together do fairly well. I make about 45K and FH about 60K. So together 105K. I don't live beyond my means, have tons stashed away in savings and investments.
BUT!

so very true. I know people who make more than me and never have money and i seriously can't understand this. I am having the wedding i want because of one reason and one reason only-I SAVE and dont really spend. I hear so many people always complaining about money but meanwhile i know they shop ALL the time, and they waste it on things they dont need. Most of my money i save. Every paycheck i get, i pay what i HAVE to pay, then theres expenses like commuting and food. Other than that i dont go out and spend. Ill do so for birthdays and occasions but the rest i keep. This is why i hate when ppl make comments about things i do spend money on. I prioritize, i make calculations for everything and only spend on what i have to. Fh laughs at me bc everytime we do go shopping i convince myself not to buy things, i always come up with excuses not to.
and same for a house. The market is what it is bc of people being unrealistic and i mentioned this on LIW before. People see something they love, put very little down, get real high mortgages and convince themselves they can do it. Problem is that life happens and if one thing goes wrong it will screw everything over if youre basically living paycheck to paycheck. Thats why i told fh were going to buy an apartment and live in it for about 2-3 years. For 2 people we dont need a 3-4 bedroom house at the moment. I also set a budget for how much we'll spend a month on a mortgage and i will NOT go over it, no matter how much i'll like a place, were currently looking at places and i wont even look at places above the budget we set. I ammaking sure our monthly mortgage payments will be less than half of both our monthly paychecks. This way we still have more than half of what we make(after taxes) and if things do occur we'll be able to handle it. After about 3 years we'll sell it and then the money we get from selling it i will use towards a down payment on a home. Its sad bc you think most ppl will learn after what is happening now but alot of people don't.
FH and others joke that i wont go out shopping alot and spending alot of money...BUT when its time to pay for all our wedding things guess who has the money-ME, and other expenses. When it comes to birthday and events i have the money. I save most of what i make, and when it comes to things that are important to me i have the money for it.
at this moment there are 3 things that are important to me; the wedding, honeymoon and buying an apartment and this is what ill spend money on, other things are not necessary.
after the wedding it will be towards saving money for all things such as kids, and even though we plan to sell the apartment and use that money for a house why not have more to put towards it. Plus after the wedding it will be towards enjoying things like traveling.
ETA: its also why i dont have anymore credit cards...got rid of them all and just have my debit card. This way you only spend money you do have..now if i can only convince fh of this

very well put! it drives me nuts when ppl who make the same amount or more money than me complain all the time about money, yet, they are always shopping or going out, etc. there are always ways to make ends meet. ppl just don't understand how to prioritize and manage their money.

Re: Salary....
I am in the same boat as other grad students. I get a $25k year stipend which is basically money for me to live on and my adviser pays my tuition. Fh makes about $45k and will be asking for a significant raise in the next few weeks. I will graduate in Dec and it seems from the market for PhDs in my field, I should be able to make between $70-80k a year. So I think FH and I will be able to live very comfortably once I graduate and find a job. But we plan on staying in our current apt (at my parents house) for a year or two after the wedding to save money (we only pay $500 a month rent).

I actually make what sounds like a very good salary, and FH makes about 35K more than I do, and can you believe that together we're still having a hard time finding an affordable house in Queens!!!
honestly, it's not surprising. house prices are ridiculous. FH and I make a decent income combined and we can't afford anything where we live in PA.
Honestly, combined FH and I make about $170k and we have a hard time. I hope it gets easier on our generation. I cry everytime I have to but gas in my truck.
I am so glad I'm not the only one. FH and I combined make about the same, and it's not easy. People hear that and they don't understand. It's sounds like a good amount of income and we can't live in NY off of it.

You are so right!!! I hear people all the time that make more then I do, I support 2 people on a very low income and, complaining they have no money and I look at them like 'WHAT THE F***!!!!!' When I tell them what I make and get NO child support, they start to look up at me and say if you can do it so can I. But they all need to stop spending, spending. I have been trying to reprogram my FH with this....just because you have doesnt mean you should spend it. You never know when a rainy day will come and you will end up with nothing if you dont have something to fall back on. The fancy car or clothes that you have will not help you then.

Agreed Mazz and Espo and others! FH and I are two new teachers. Who have an absolutely ridiculous amount of loans to pay back. Im talking over 100,000 just for me alone. Despite this, FH and I own our own condo. Is it a mansion? NO. Is it in the best area of Long Island? Absolutely not. But we work hard and make ends meet every month. Do we eat out? Not really. Do we go out shopping? Nope. But we are happy and have our own place. This thread bothered me too because it reminds me that people are never happy with what they have. You have to sacrifice somethings to get what you want. Its all about prioritiizing.
