Agreed Mazz and Espo and others! FH and I are two new teachers. Who have an absolutely ridiculous amount of loans to pay back. Im talking over 100,000 just for me alone. Despite this, FH and I own our own condo. Is it a mansion? NO. Is it in the best area of Long Island? Absolutely not. But we work hard and make ends meet every month. Do we eat out? Not really. Do we go out shopping? Nope. But we are happy and have our own place. This thread bothered me too because it reminds me that people are never happy with what they have. You have to sacrifice somethings to get what you want. Its all about prioritiizing.

I also want to agree... people poke fun at teachers saying we dont make a lot of money but I make more than any of my other friends. While it's HARD to save and pay rent and make payments for the wedding, it's absolutely possible. It really is all about prioritizing... having expensive cars and buying new bags every month certainly is not a requirement. You just have to ask yourself, what do I want more, a financially secure future, or a bag that costs more than my rent.

I actually make what sounds like a very good salary, and FH makes about 35K more than I do, and can you believe that together we're still having a hard time finding an affordable house in Queens!!!

honestly, it's not surprising. house prices are ridiculous. FH and I make a decent income combined and we can't afford anything where we live in PA.

Honestly, combined FH and I make about $170k and we have a hard time. I hope it gets easier on our generation. I cry everytime I have to but gas in my truck.

I am so glad I'm not the only one. FH and I combined make about the same, and it's not easy. People hear that and they don't understand. It's sounds like a good amount of income and we can't live in NY off of it.

Excuse my language, but thats total BS.... my parents make a whole lot less... and not only do they own a condo but they have a house upstate, plus boat, camper, quads, snowmobile, etc etc etc .... You can def afford something 'decent' on 170... plz... u could even afford something very nice!!! maybe it wont be a mansion in the hamptons but give me a break..... like others said, spending way above your means is why people end up saying these things...

Wow, I kinda feel attacked by this comment. FH and I save money in our savings and contribute to our IRA, pay for our house we just bought [in nassau county], put money towards the wedding, pay for my commuting back and fourth to the city [where I work], pay for 2 cars, 3 car insurance [his car, my car and his work truck], and help our families out. So before you say that $170 is a lot and I can live fine you should really hear the whole senario. Yes we go out to dinner and I have nice stuff, but I also work 3 jobs and 7 days a week, so I feel as if I deserve to treat my self once in a while. FH and I bust our butts and the only thing I said that may have seemed like 'complaining' was that our economy is making it hard to live ie. Gas prices etc.

Sorry you feel attacked but its frustrating to hear about how hard it is to live for someone making a considerable amount of moeny more than most. Just like you said we should know the whole story, you dont know everyone elses and I (making a LOT less) felt frustrated by your comment. We all work hard. If you don't want to work 7 days a week (i odnt blame you) make your 'treats' either cheaper treats or more spread out.

I'm a student -- it's so much fun to get paychecks over the summer but I'm looking forward to getting them all year

Re: Salary....

this is very interesting to me. when it comes to a bride who can't decide about a dress or a photographer or a rh, everybody is all mushy and supportive of each person's individual situation. now we're talking about a person's financial picture, and people are on here making sweeping statements about what other people whom they know nothing about should and should not be able to afford. if individual differences apply to ANY topic, it's this one.

there are a lot of factors that impact one's ability to buy a house. were you able to live at home for a little while to save money before getting your own place? did mommy and daddy help with college? how quickly were you able to find a job after graduation? these are just a FEW of the factors that could set one person apart from another in spite of the fact that they have similar annual salaries.

let's also acknowledge that houses have TRIPLED in cost over the last 10 years on long island, and while it's possible to afford a home on 100k/year, not everyone is willing to sacrifice EVERYTHING else--working 2 jobs, staying home every weekend, sacrificing vacations, and much more--in life to pay this kind of blood money for a roof over one's head. furthermore, what your PARENTS make and what they can afford on that income is completely irrelevant because they got into the market at a very different time--let's be fair. it's hard to make it here, period. i don't appreciate the fact that some of the ladies here have completely invalidated the struggles of strangers by sounding off of something so that's so dependent on the individual situation.

I dont think its invalidating anyone, just merely stating that there definitely is a possibilty of 'surviving' and more on less than that particular bride makes.

If anything, I'd say it was more helpful advice than a dig or attack on someone.

I agree what peoples parents have is an entirely different situation. The market was very different, and also even if $100k/year gives everyone $10k in savings each year..... a person in their 20s might only have a few years of that savings, while someone 20-30 years older has had MANY more years for that to accumulate.

Im not invailidating the struggle but rather saying we ALL struggle. There is also always a way to make something work as proven by those who are making less and making ends meet. All I am saying is that sacrifices need to be made. Believe me, I know houses are expensive which is why FH and are living in a small condo in a not so great area. But it was important to us. My feeling is you have to decide what is most important. To us, it was living together. And no Im not feeling SO 'mushy' about this because I can't really feel sorry for people complaining about not having a enough money when Im making thousands of dollars less and am hangin in there. And in answer to your question, no I didnt save, and no I didnt really live at home with 'mommy and daddy.' Please, don't be condescending to the rest of us.

i think you could say that about some of the responses (helpful advice), and i think others are clearly critical. this is a REALLY sensitive topic, and i think it's been handled rather clumsily by some of our posters.

Wow, I can't believe how out of control this thread got. But seriously, whoever brought up this topic just wanted to kick back and compare. That's retarded. Who cares about what people have or don't have. I know what I have and don't have and that is what counts.

I hate coming on here and seeing some threads such as 'What does your FH do for a living?' and 'What kind of car do you have?' It's ridiculous!!!!!! People for some reason constantly need to feel adequate by knowing they have more. Whatever....

A really sensitive topic that should never even have been brought up in the first place.... Who the fcuk cares what others make? I certainly do not....

And I highly highly defend all the gurls that are struggling with the low pay and still making ends meet... you gurls are really role models and it shows you know how to manage your money... Thats a tough thing for alot of people out there
