Same metal

Is anyone getting a different metal for their wedding ring? My e-ring is platinum...can I get away with wearing a different metal for my wedding ring?

Re: Same metal

white gold and plat. look exactly the same too me... but thats jmho. I adore the idea of platinum but it is a much softer metal so it nics and scratches easier. I think its really up to you and what you want to spend.

Re: Same metal

I would try to do whatever looks the best. If white gold looks like it matches it and u really can't afford to get platinum then i would do it. But if u can afford to stretch and get platinum that is a much better way to go.

Re: Same metal

My e-ring is platinum but my band is white gold ... I tried them on together and they look exactly the same to me. Originally I was dead set on getting the same metal for both, but to pay $1000 extra for a ring that looks exactly the same to me just didn't add up. But that's just me!

I think you should be fine.

ITA. My e-ring is platinum and I'm looking for a white gold wedding ring. The platinum scratches easily, the underside of my band already has a scratch. IMO, platinum is not worth the extra expense....I would be fine with my ring being 18K gold, can't tell the difference.

Re: Same metal

Platinum and white gold will look the same now. BUT, they will wear very differently. If you plan on wearing these rings forever (no upgrades) then it's better to get the same metals.

Re: Same metal

Platinum scratches white gold. Or is it vice a versa? Either way, I wouldn't combine the two if I were you. My e-ring is Platinum and my Wedding Band is Palladium. It's a Platinum alloy.

Re: Same metal

Also, as an FYI, every jeweler I spoke with when I was looking for my wedding band told me not to get a platinum band, despite the fact that I was so set on it. They all kind of said, 'Why spend the extra money?' I was sort of annoyed and couldn't understand why they were trying to dissuade me from giving them extra money ... but everyone I talked to insisted it didn't matter and that spending the $$$ on a platinum band was unnecessary.

So I guess these are my ... 4 cents? LOL

Re: Same metal

My ering is platinum, and we plan on getting white gold bands because of cost.

However, now that everything is going in the crapper, and precious metals are the only thing that are going to be worth anything shortly, we are rethinking and may switch to platinum purely from a business standpoint. We're so romantic, it kills me.

Re: Same metal

White gold is naturally more grayish so it is plated with rhodium to give it more of a white look. Rhodium fades over time so your white gold rings will need to be replated to remain white. Platinum will stay white. Therefore, if you're mixing metals on your finger and they match today, they probably will not match a few years down the road.

Platinum also does not scratch as easily as white gold. When platinum does scratch it's easier to buff it out.

I heard the exact opposite and had many friends who had problems with scratches in their platinum rings. I personally think platinum looks kind of gray and I prefer white gold. My whitegold ering look perfect still.
Pricewise it does not really matter that much though, since gold is so valuable right now....

The tarnishing occurs over years, not a short time period. And this isn't something I made up - it's a fact. But I'm not trying to sway anyone's decision, just giving the info. Hope it helps!

Re: Same metal

I heard that you should not mix platinum and white gold b/c platinum can wear away the white gold and possibly loosen stones...anyone know if that is true?
