Re: Save the Pledge of Allegiance
I actually am not a big fan of the Pledge of Alligence becasue of the one nation under god part, If there is to be a seperation of Church and State, then why is god mentioned in the pledge.

Re: Save the Pledge of Allegiance
Although it doesn't bother me that under God is in the pledge and on our $$, I can understand why some want it removed for the same reason as shelzyp mentioned.
I am a teacher (and atheist) and although I stand for the pledge...I will not say it or put my hand over my heart...
I think it is pathetic that b/c Congress was afraid of communism they added a religious component to our pledge...the phrase 'under god' is less than 50 years old...
I was also very perturbed when the entire congress of the US stood on capitol hill and say 'god bless america' after 9/11...there are so many patriotic songs that do not mention the judeo-christian god...
IMO this makes a mockery of our Constitution that includes separation of church and state

Re: Save the Pledge of Allegiance
Yikes. Ouch. Not for nothing, but I will proudly say the Pledge anytime, with my hand on my heart and with the 'under God' part (you HAD to see that coming from me).
But I respect y'alls right not to say it. The right to differing opinions and the right to free speech is what this country was founded on.
And yabbo - I respect your right to have been perturbed when Congress sang God Bless America, in worship of a 'judeo-christian god,' but I know I speak for many Americans when I say religion gave many of us huge, huge comfort in the days following 9/11. Church was the first place I went after I came out of my daze, and my crucifix went onto my neck so fast that day and stayed there. Faith gives people enormous comfort. That's all I wanted to say.
thrilled...I don't discourage religion...if it soothes you, gives you faith, or makes you a good person...I am all for it...
What I DON'T like is when the governemtnacts as there is a national or preferred religion...that puts a lot of Americans in an awkward spot...Does it mean that the government will favor you b/c you are Christian...but not me?
I know that is an extreme example...but those acts do make non-Christians/Jews feel out of place...

Re: Save the Pledge of Allegiance
Growing up I was forced to say the Pledge of Allegience in school, by teachers, and even when older, I was often yelled at for not saying it, THis is the part that bothers me.
This is so contradictory it makes me sick!!!
Seperation of church and state is only used when it fits the government.
I am all for people being religious, it is your decsion, but that decison should not be pushed on myself, becase I am not.
I was raised Roman Catholic (baptised, made comminium, and confirmation) but I couldn't even image being jewish or buddist or muslim and having to say the pledge.

Re: Save the Pledge of Allegiance
I'm confused. How is 'under god' or 'god bless america' specifically a judeo-christian thing? Am I missing something?

Re: Save the Pledge of Allegiance
I do not believe in god - atheist, so I don't like saying one nation under god, to me that is not true, and the fact that is our pledge of alliegence, I can't say it because it goes against my beliefs.
'under God' (capitalized) could only refer to the mono-theistic religions...Christianity, Judaism and Islam...but Muslims use the term 'Allah'
Buddhists, Hindus, Sihks, Shintoists, Taoists, animists, atheists do NOT believe in 'God'

Re: Save the Pledge of Allegiance
Yabbobay, I have to challenge you on that. I was raised Hindu and although it's a 'polytheistic' religion all of the gods and goddesses really just represent the different forms and functions of one God/Supreme Being/Divinity/Higher Power, etc.. So, we do believe in 'God' and that's why I never thought of 'under God' as being part of judeo-christian religion only and I'm not sure if people of other faiths do either.

Re: Save the Pledge of Allegiance
Well then as an athiest I am opposed to the term god.
Nina...I stand corrected on Hinduism...but like shelzyp...it offends me...why should I have to pledge my faith in something i don't believe in...and the Constitution tells me it is ok not to believe in it...
btw
President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the act adding 'under God,' he said, 'From this day forward, the millions of our school children will daily proclaim in every city and town, every village and rural schoolhouse, the dedication of our Nation and our people to the Almighty.'

Re: Save the Pledge of Allegiance
But there is absolutely nothing wrong with debates.
I would not sign that pledge, because although the wording states 'not to forbit the recital', it is currently interpreted as mandatory to recite in some schools. And if I or my children do not believe in God and the school would enforce the recital of the pledge, it effectively states that you must believe in God.
There were a few cases where HS students protested to recite the pledge and were disciplined for it. I have no desire to be hiring a lawyer over the interpretation of my rights or my children's rights.
I think this is the perfect place to debate...one person asked people to sign the petition...I am asking people to reconsider...
why is everyone afraid of debating and having different opinions? no one bashed...or name called...we argued like mature adults...

Re: Save the Pledge of Allegiance
I too am an athiest, however, I proudly say the whole pledge and I am not offended that under god is in there, the belief of god part of our country and the heritage of the nation. JMO too ! I am going to go proudly sign my name. Plus I have bigger things in my life to worry about...seems very petty to me.

Re: Save the Pledge of Allegiance
yabbo and shelzy, like I stated in an earlier post, I do agree with you about removing those terms as part ofh the seperation of Church and State. There are children who are raised aethiest and they shouldn't have to say the Pledge in school with 'under God' if they don't believe that.
I was just clarifying the thing about Judeo-Christianity and Hinduism.
