Saving $$ for the wedding

Re: Saving $$ for the wedding

FI and I both work 2 jobs. I pretty much work 7 days a week (9-5 on the weekdays and in the morning at a deli on the weekends). I also, techincally, have a 3rd job which is sporatic (it's doing catering with a friend of mine - whenever her boss had a job and needs extra people to calls me and I go).

Working 2 jobs is normal to me though (I've been doing it for since I was a Freshman in HS)

FH calls me the money drill sergeant because every check, I tell him 'give me the savings money'. But it gets tough... I havent really bought myself anything I really love in a long time.. I miss shopping so bad!!!!

OMG me too! I haven't shopped in FOREVER!!!

Girls, FH and I sat down a couple of month ago and wrote out how much I bring home every week (I'm a TERRIBLE saver but I don't shop go figure! He on the other hand, save more money then he makes!) and my expenses for the week. We multiplied by 4 for the entire month and then subtracted that from my monthly take home from work. We figured it all out and he gets $400 I have to give him a month to put towards the wedding. I haven't started yet but it should help us a lot. I mean our wedding is Sept 5 so figure that's about $4,000 we'll be saving just of my money alone, plus gifts and his money.

i think what has really helped is cutting back in certain areas of wedding planning. for instance, we really wanted a saturday night but to save money we did a saturday day. i really wanted high centerpieces but again, to save over 1k i went with the low's. its all about compromising... i know that in the end my wedding will be beautiful no matter what! good luck you will get through it

Re: Saving $$ for the wedding

I know what you mean - we're so lucky that my parents are paying for the bulk of the wedding, but we still do want to help out, and it's so hard to save. FH is in school, and I also have to save for summers (I work in a school and don't get paid over the summers). THis is so dorky, but what we started to do was buy the $3.50 1000-count puzzles at Target, and that has become our weekend nights. We actually have a lot of fun doing it and it helps us to save money. I've been making pizza with store-bought dough to save money as well on the weekends.

We all have to do whatever it takes to save a dollar. Unfortunately, FH and I are paying for this whole wedding ourselves. He works during the day and then has side jobs at night!! I was going to start looking for another job (P/T), but by the time I get home from my day job I am exhausted!!

That is why we decided to have a 2011 wedding, so that we have enough time to save. I only booked the RH and Church because I wanted to ensure that I was going to get the date that I wanted.

Everything else, I leave in Gods hand to help me sort things out. Either way, I am enjoying this moments to the fullest.

We direct deposit a good chunk of our paychecks each period into an Orange Savings Account. We don't see the money so we don't spend it.

We started clipping coupons and eat out a lot less too!

Re: Saving $$ for the wedding

I've been married a year and I am now a homeowner so I can totally relate to how stressful it is to make bill payments along with wedding plans. Here is how we budget ourselves for the house bills:

Me AND DH
-brown bag lunch
-no more starbucks coffee
-cut back on eating out to once a month(look for coupons)
-STAY AWAY FROM THE MALL if possible
-rent movies from the library instead of blockbuster
-check all grocery store coupons and see if they accept competitor coupons, check circulars for sales www.coupons.com
-I have a nice little pt job where I work when they need me

Trust me it all adds up.

you are not alone I am working 2 jobs as well saving for the wedding, Ihave not booked a HM yet It wil have to be after the wedding! I am doing it alone FH wants a house and wanted to go to city hall so all his money is going to savings, He is thinking about our future he has a point maybe but I also wanted a wedding ( and he ended up picking the more expensive invite - go figure) anyway I know its tough My wedding is in 3 mths and I really dont know how I have been pulling things off, My friends have been great (all of Them) and have excused me for not going out for anyones birthday for the last year so I dont have to spend money - I just have to make it up to them all next year they said but not going out and shopping has really helped I only bought 2 items for the fall I usally spend $400 every season and I cut that out! I am also behind like $4000 - crap I would started bringing lunch to work my mother also made an envelope up for each vendor with the amt I own and I have been putting money in there and sealing it closed once its complete so far pre cana, Dj, chruch and my dress/shoes are all paid off and the payment I have to make in 3 weeks to my RH( I also have my BM gifts & headpice) it really has helped once the cermoney dj and Rh are paid off you can still have a wedding I have a hummer limo and if I need to I would just get somthing smaller and cost less, and my RH is doing my centerpieces1

I wrote everything down also and found the same thing. We eat out WAY too much! I am looking for a second job now in hopes that it will help out over the holidays.

Im in the same boat. It doesnt help that we go out to eat a lot (not nice places but out none the less) I also have a 2 year old and i am out of work on workers compensation. It gets hard and many tears have been shed. It helps to write down EVERYTHING you buy, and pay cash, dont charge or debit

Anyone have any tips/advice on saving? or doing budget friendly activities?

Take advantage of Happy Hour. For instance we go out on Tues/Wed to Buffalo Wild Wings (.50 wings and $3 beers on draft) With $20 we can have wings and beer and just let loose for a bit.

Re: Saving $$ for the wedding

I was lucky to land a great paying job right after I graduated college, but with this economy my pay got cut over n over again and now I only work part time but travel far to make it like full time hours. My boss says I will get my reg pay back once it picks up but dont know when that is n on top of that my FH is unemployed I know I can afford the wedding if I get my salary back but am scared to book the place... I dont wanna book it and then not be able to afford it. it is so hard and stressful

Anyone have any suggestions for a second job working nights where there is no lifting involved (I was also in a car accident 6 months ago which messed up my back which also made me cut back in hrs...)

Re: Saving $$ for the wedding

I was having the same problems myself when I was planning for my wedding. What I did was a lot of research and network. If you have friends in the wedding related field (music, tailor, home decor), hire them in exchange for favors/discounts. Also, the guest list can contribute to the cost of your wedding depending if you are having a large or small wedding. Doing an afternoon wedding is the most affordable, ex. a cocktail hour or brunch instead of a sit-down or buffet reception. I read an article recently for cut backs. It said the smallest things help like ex. bagging your own lunch to work instead of buying coffee (carry your own thermos/mug to work), eating in instead of eating out. And at the end of the month when you calculate your expenses, you'll notice a bit of a difference. For ex. if you buy a cup of coffee everyday for $1.50 (5 days) = 7.50 weekly. And in a month that's approx. $30.00. In a year, $360.00 spent for coffee alone. It may not seem like a lot but it does make a difference to the expenses.

Re: Saving $$ for the wedding

FH and I are in the same boat. I was unemployeed for 8 months so i didnt save anything. He had to pay my bills, his and try to save.

Now that I have a job we have added up all out monthly bills and now when we get paid it all goes in our joint account and all the bills get paid out of there and we get $100/week allowence for gas and food and anything we may need. Once our bills come out we take whats left over before the next paycheck comes in and we put it in out ING account. We've been doing much better. But still some weeks we save nothing because we have way too many bills. UGH
I hope we make it! 6 months to go

It is VERY difficult. My best advice is put your income tax return to good use

Re: Saving $$ for the wedding

We're on a tight budget too. We're paying for it all ourselves and save everything. We do go out every now an then. It's like a budget diet. If you don't indulge once in a while you may end up binging. But we are working harder and longer and saving mos of it.

As for saving tips...if you can't bring your own food to work, try eating half your lunch and saving the rest for the next day...rationing is good for your budget and your waistline.

We're doing a Secret Santa for the holidays with a $30 gift limit.

We save all of our change and dump it into our savings month end...it really adds up. We dump $75 at least into the account in one month.

Sell on eBay.
