Saving money.. How are you doing with that??

Original post by SIBride06

Hi ladies.

Have you ever sat down to really think about how expensive our wedding will be??? The wedding alone is costing us a fortune.. Im not even counting in all the money we have to spend to furnish our apartment when the time comes.. and OMG.. its only 20 more months until I get married!!! Thank god for bridal showers!!!

Have you ladies drastically cut corners to save for this joyous event?? What are your saving secrets???

And the BIG question...

Has anyone set any finanical goals ( etc.. June I want to have so & so in the bank... Dec 31st.. I want to have $$$ in the bank). Were these goals met??? If not.. How did you feel?? My FI & I hit a dry period (savings wise). Im just hoping to reach our finanical goal by the end of this year or I will seriously go out of my mind!!

Am I making any sense??

I want more info on the ING account. Can you just open it online and send them a check?

I have an ING account, and so does FI -- he convinced me to open one and I'm glad he did. It's very easy to set up. Go to Ingdirect.com, they'll have you give them the numbers for your checking account (they deposit a few cents into your checking first and you have to then confirm the amount for security reasons -- still, it's a free 20 cents! ). Then you can transfer money back and forth between accounts. You can also set it up to transfer a set amount each week or month or however often you want. I earned about $35 interest last year, and I think it was only opened in the summer!

We are both saving as much as we can after paying our bills each month. It's so hard!!!
We both worry so much that we won't have enough money to pay for the wedding but also about after the wedding. Things are so expensive especially on LI. Hopefully, it all works out.

I love my ING account! I even got $25 free for opening it! That alone was worth it to me! FI and I are saving every little bit of $$. We bring lunch every day and don't eat out much anymore. We do occasionally, but it has been cut drastically. Right now FI has a lot of debt, so he is paying that off and I am saving whatever I can for the wedding. I have almost no debt (only car and school loans) and I pay my bills off every month. We put all of the money people gave us for our engagement in the bank, as well as money from Christmas, birthdays, etc. FI will use his tax return to pay off the majority of his bills and then the leftover money will go to the wedding. So far, we haven't touched ANY of the money in the bank! We have been able to pay all of the deposits for vendors with money that came from our checking accounts. neither of us want any debt from the wedding and are trying our hardest to spend as little as possible... this means no big vacation for us. But it's worth it!

Ugh, I put away $100/week towards the wedding. My FI and I already live together and have a lot of stuff. Since we don't have anything for the HM I'm thinking we might register for that and people can give us $$, cause that's really what we need. Saving is hard and everything month I keep thinking we're not gonna make it!!!

We just opened a joint savings acct. We have been putting away $1,500 a month for the wedding and related. We are splitting the other bills, i.e. rent, car payments, insurance and such. It's tight, I've discovered Walmart recently and am a coupon clipper now but it will all be worth it. Besides its good practice for saving for a house, which is next

I am half way to what i need to save and my wedding is 14 months away! I work 6 days a week and have little time to shop (which is a good thing). I am in scrubs the majority of the time so having to buy clothes for work isn't a problem. FI is in England so dinner isn't a problem. The only thing is the 400 dollar plane ticket every other month! I have saved 4000 in 4 months - so i put away about 1000 a month!

i love ingdirect! opening an account with them was one of the best decisions i have ever made. it's so easy to use and their rates are great! my fh opened one up recently too. we both put away as often as possible. if your wedding isn't right around the corner, i would recommend looking into their CDs. the rates are higher than the savings account rates but you're locked in for a specific amount of time. we put some money away in a 1 year CD too.

also, not only do you get money for opening an account, you can $10 for each referral that opens an account.

since i'm not making a lot of money right now, i've been even saving my change. after my coin jar gets pretty full, i go to the local commerce bank and put it into the penny arcade. it's a good way to save a little without too much effort.

Every month we put away what we can. If you right down everything you need and how much everything costs then devide by how many till the wedding, it will put you on the budget to succeed your goal. we have 14 more months and we are right on target. It's tough especially when you don't live at home. We have been living together for 2 1/2 years and its expensive! but you get by and enjoy life. Try not to STRESS, it always works out in the end.

Re: Saving money.. How are you doing with that??

We're EXTREMELY lucky to both live at home so neither of us pay rent. We each put the same amount of money a week in a joint account. It doesn't make me feel so bad because I write the checks out to myself!! We're paying for the whole thing ourselves so it does break my heart that we have to scrounge to come up with a downpayment for someplace to live.

P.S. JUST A QUESTION....
WHEN EVERYONE SAYS 'WE PUT AWAY $$$ A MONTH' DOES EVERYONE MEAN TOGETHER OR INDIVIDUALLY???? JUST WONDERING!

My goal is to save $500 each month (minimum) and FH is doing the same.
