Saw 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' last night.

First, I have to admit that DH and I are extremely tough critics. After 71/2 yrs in NYC I have seen only a handful of shows that met my expectations. With that said, I wholeheartedly recommend to get tickets to this show. I thought that it was hilarious. John Lithgow(Lawrence- the Michael Cane role in the movie) was great (not much of a singer, but the role really doesn't require it). Joanna Gleason(Muriel) was charming and funny. Her voice sounded a little tired, but overall her performance was good. Sherie Rene Scott (Christine- the Glenn Headly role in the movie) sang the crap out of her songs and did a good job with the role. I have to say that the person who really makes the show fly is Norbet Leo Butz (Freddy- played by Steve Martin in the movie). Mark my words he is going to win the Tony Award for this performance. He was wonderful!!!! I knew the boy could sing, but he is also just a fabulous actor!!! While a lot of his physical comedy was reminiscent of Steve Martin he still managed to make the character his own.
The music and lyrics (written by David Yazbek who also wrote the music and lyrics for the musical 'The Full Monty') are melodic and extremely funny. Although, both DH and I felt that the last song could have been stronger. The sets are good and set the mood of the show well.

Overall, I would say that if you are in the mood for some laughs run, don't walk to see this show.

I saw it last week -- we stayed for the 1st half and left -- I was so tired after work and my company got us discounted tix...we paid $20 so I didn't feel too bad about it.

I def. agree w/your review of Mr. Butz - he was really excellent and to me, carried the whole thing.

My coworkers said the 2nd act wasn't that great...
It kind reminded me of a play that a school would put on - a school with lots of $$.
I think just b/c the sets were so basic. But then again, it is in previews...

I liked the fact that the sets were not the show. I mean Miss Saigon was all about a helicopter and a car. I like that they are not relying on spectacle to make up for a weak piece.

true
i actually did like the palm trees b/c they had beads on them and being that i knit and make loads of different crafts -- i thought it was very clever & creative.
miss saigon and those kind of shows are those huge productions...they are what they are
this was light and i enjoyed the 1st act - i thought that number when he rapped was really cute and i looked over and saw everyone in my office laughing - all 100+ of us.
including the owners...

i stayed in a room at the hudson hotel the night before and i had a horrible night's sleep so that was the reason i left
not b/c i hated it
i just was too exhausted from my over chic room
if anyone wants a reivew of that fm me
