School -> Then & Now

School -> Then & Now

i was speaking w/ a friend today about how things are SO different now from when we were in school. the conversation lead to various incidents that we thought were somewhat harsh, but no one really made a fuss over and how they would NEVER be tolerated now.

MY SCHOOL DAY MEMORIES
(add yours)

1st grade - i was sent to the corner and had to sit IN the garbage can

4th grade - teacher pulled out a brush and started roughly brushing a classmates hair because she (teacher) said it was WAY too knotty

4th grade - teacher pulled student by the ear to the sink to wash his dirty hands prior to snack

6th grade - male teacher grabbed a student by the collar and threw him against the wall. held him there as he yelled at him

8th grade - math teacher threw chalk and erasers at students when he was frustrated

5th grade I remember a sub grabbing my ponytail and telling me must not have brushed your ponytail enough.

All through elementary school I remember the school nurses always coming in to the lice check and that the school dr kooked like santa clause. The eye test- we had to point in the direction of the E

I remember Mr. Harper giving us a 'pop' quiz everytime the Giants lost.

I remember Mr. Hottinger picking up desks and throwing them with students in them

I remember Mr. Worm reassigning seats after a quiz and he would assign people to the 'no hope in life row' and the 'dumb row'

Holy CRAP! can we get a vote from all of the LIbrides/teachers as to whether they think this is acceptable treatment?

JAX, (she's getting her ED Doctorate), is this acceptable?

Re: School -> Then & Now

i just thought of another. this was one of the MOST uncomfortable moments of my life and i can GUARNTEE that this DOES NOT happen nowadays.

6th grade -we were FORCED to go the nurse's office for a BREAST exam. basically we went to her room (one by one), had to disrobe and she FELT us up. afterwards, we were sent home w/ self-exam literature.

PLEASE TELL I WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT HAD TO DO THIS

I'm certainly no expert here (i'm getting my PsyD in school-clinical child psych, and have my MSEd in school psych, but i'm definitely not an expert in education), but in this day in age, the teacher certainly couldn't get away with it!! I do not think that was acceptable way to treat a student, and it doesn't teach the child anything in the long run. More has to be done to explore the reasons the child was having such a hard time sitting in his chair.

I remember having to take everything off for a scoliosis(sp) test. And I remember to get on the 7th gr bball team, the male coach did the physicals for a 15.00 fee.

In 4th grade a boy stabbed me with a pencil in my leg. The assistant principal asked me to come to her office to lift up my skirt and show her (lovely catholic school). She didn't see anything and called me a liar. My mother went up there and raised hell. I think her mouth echoed throughout the hallways.

In 5th grade I remember the librarian through a girl against the bookshelf, hit my friend on the head with books and pushed my head down into a book and screamed to 'READ!' Maybe this is why I don't like to read that much to this day!

Oh memories!!!

My 4th grade teacher had a bunch of paddles in the closet and she would threaten to hit us (but never did)

There was a heavy girl in my class and she said 'I need the big paddle for you!'

So mean.

I remember the scoliosis test which was traumatic enough

In 2nd grade our teacher threw this kid's desk in the hallway and told the kid he didn't belong to be in school and he deserves a good 'beating.'

Also in 2nd grade I was made to share my reading textbook (& workbook) w/ the boy that lived across the street from me. We had to go over e/o's houses to do HW.

In 3rd grade my teacher spent about 50% of the day telling us about her date the night before and about fights with her sister and how her dad is in the hospital.

She also wrote almost in a calligraphy way, but then told us when we had our Masters we could write anyway we wanted but as long as we were in her classroom we had to write the way on the alphabet chart.

In 4th grade during chorus practice, a girl was laughing and she told the girl she was out of the chorus and said, 'you aren't cute enough to be on stage anyway.'

In 7th grade our SS teacher would throw chalk and erasers at students. He also would traumatize kids when they read. He wouldn't let you move on to another word until you got it right and said it 3x.

In my brother's HS, the brother threw some kid up against the wall.

I remember my one of my brother's elem school teachers would make him sit under his desk - he was hyperactive and she would say to him 'If you're going to act like a dog, go sit under the desk like a dog!'

Re: School -> Then & Now

I have a bad one. When I was in 4th grade my mom demanded that I get testing done because she suspected I had a learning disability. I went through the battery of tests and they determined that it was true. So, my mom and I had an appointment after school to meet with my teacher to discuss it with her and to explain why I would have to leave the classroom for 2 hours a day to work with a specialist. She told my mom, while I was sitting there, 'Beth doesn't have a learning disability, she's just stupid and lazy'. And, every day when I would get back from my lessons with the specialist, she would ridicule me in front of the class about how I was falling behind in my assignments and that I was 'slow'. Nice, eh?

That's terrible!!! I get so angry when I hear stories like this, both as a school psychologist and as an aunt of a child with a LD. We just found out that my nephew has a learning disability. He's in kindergarten, and has been struggling. When my sister told the teacher what they found, the teacher continued her barrage of complaints of what he doesn't and can't do.....my sister gets so frustrated and upset.

OMG - as a teacher today, i cannot believe what teachers of yesteryear got away with!!!
some of it is so terribly saddening (calling a kid 'stupid and lazy') and yet, some stuff is definitely amusing at the same time (the 'no hope in life' row) .. wow ..

the worst that happened to me was being sent out into the hallway like it was my job in first grade (i belieive it was every other day, at least). these days that is SO not acceptable!

eta: if anyone ever attempted a breast exam on me in 6th grade in school ... seriously, i would have literally pummelled them to the ground! that is horrific!! (like someone else said, the scoliosis test was humiliating enough!)
