i was speaking w/ a friend today about how things are SO different now from when we were in school. the conversation lead to various incidents that we thought were somewhat harsh, but no one really made a fuss over and how they would NEVER be tolerated now.
MY SCHOOL DAY MEMORIES (add yours)
1st grade - i was sent to the corner and had to sit IN the garbage can
4th grade - teacher pulled out a brush and started roughly brushing a classmates hair because she (teacher) said it was WAY too knotty
4th grade - teacher pulled student by the ear to the sink to wash his dirty hands prior to snack
6th grade - male teacher grabbed a student by the collar and threw him against the wall. held him there as he yelled at him
8th grade - math teacher threw chalk and erasers at students when he was frustrated

Re: School -> Then & Now
I never had anything this bad happen to me, but I went to school in CT.
We DID have the scoliosis test, though, administered by a female gym teacher.
The worst thing that ever happened to me in school was in 4th grade. I got up to look something up in a reference book. There was a clothesline hanging low to the ground with paper mache projects on it in my way. I tried to step over it, but tripped and fell. A few of the projects broke. The teacher COMPLETELY ignored the fact that I was lying on the floor, hurt, and yells at me for breaking the darned mache. I was a good kid, never a trouble maker.

I have a bad one. When I was in 4th grade my mom demanded that I get testing done because she suspected I had a learning disability. I went through the battery of tests and they determined that it was true. So, my mom and I had an appointment after school to meet with my teacher to discuss it with her and to explain why I would have to leave the classroom for 2 hours a day to work with a specialist. She told my mom, while I was sitting there, 'Beth doesn't have a learning disability, she's just stupid and lazy'. And, every day when I would get back from my lessons with the specialist, she would ridicule me in front of the class about how I was falling behind in my assignments and that I was 'slow'. Nice, eh?
That's terrible!!! I get so angry when I hear stories like this, both as a school psychologist and as an aunt of a child with a LD. We just found out that my nephew has a learning disability. He's in kindergarten, and has been struggling. When my sister told the teacher what they found, the teacher continued her barrage of complaints of what he doesn't and can't do.....my sister gets so frustrated and upset.
Oh trust me, it infuriated me for years - I had a serious complex until I left for College. I later found out that I wasn't the only person that she severely devastated, and that she recently retired because she's very ill. For years I wanted to write her a letter telling her what she did to me, but by the same token, I never would have been as driven as I am today if it wasn't for that horrific, horrific year.

When I was in 5th Grade. Someone threw a football across the field And it hit me in the nose. My nose broke. I went to the nurse with my nose gushing and blood all over my shirt and she gave me an ice pack and told me to go back to class. That lady was such an old B!tch. When I got home my mom freaked out and took me to the hospital. My mom was so pissed she never even called to tell her I got hurt. We so should have sued

Kristin, I used to get hit in the face all the time in gym class!!!!!!!! Softballs, basketballs, ONCE, another kid spiked a volleyball into my face!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd make a joke about my face being magnetic to balls, but people might get the wrong idea.

Re: School -> Then & Now
Well I am a teacher and I was just telling my class the other day that I would NEVER HAVE THOUGHT of speaking to my teachers they way they speak to me! They have absolutely no respect for authority figures and neither do their parents.
I remember in 2nd grade my teacher was a Johovah's Witness and forbid anyone to have a class party and my mother brought in stuff for my b-day anyway Way to go mom!!
3rd Grade- My teacher was in a horrible car accident and I remember when she visited us in a wheel chair...I had never cried as much (at that age) as I did that day Still makes me upset.

5th Grade- A kid behind me in class wasn't feeling so well, and wound up puking in his chair. Well, he tried to cover it w/ his hands but the puke just wound up splattering all over, INCLUDING some chunks on the back of my shirt back and MY HAIR!!!!!!! To this day I cannot tolerate the sound or smell or IDEA of vomit. Let's put it this way, I was never the college friend who helped her puking girlfriend in the bathroom. I feel nauseous after telling this...
