What is everyone's feedback on getting married on Sept. 11, 2004? I'm just imagining it now my guest getting the invitation and wondering how there reaction would be. I'm actually thinking about getting married Sept 10, 2004 then having the reception September 11, 2004. The catering halls are discounting heavily because of the date.

You might want to check out this thread I started on this a few weeks ago.
I'm still considering it as an option, but don't know anyone else who has booked anything for that date yet.

I think i'm going to go for it. I kind of feel guilty and I'm not sure on what my guests would say but I'm saving a heck of alot of money plus I think it'll set new meaning that day for us.

I wouldn't want my wedding day to be at a time when I know so many people are sad and mouring the lost of loved ones. Also I wouldnt want to my anniversary to be on that day year after year. My brothers Birtday is on 9/11 and he doenst even celebrate it anymore. Reception halls also discount heavily in Dec, Jan & Feb.... JMO but I wouldn't consider it.

I think a lot of people would find it hard to celebrate on a day that is so sad. I wouldn't do it.

I know people won't agree with me, but I don't see why you should not have your wedding on September 11. That was such a horrible day and it is something that no one will ever forget. But life does go on. We can not live in the past. Getting married on that day would help give you and your family something positive to look foward to on that day instead of dreading it each year.
My brother died on May 25, 1996. I thought that day would haunt me and I would be miserable on that day for the rest of my life. Then I met FH. Well, he proposed to me on May 25, 2002. Forever giving that day new meaning. I no longer dread that day and sit there crying anymore. Instead I remember my brother and I remember the man who asked me to become is wife. I always felt that my brother, in some strange and spiritual way, led my FH to me. My FH and my brother both have the same birthday, August 16. So when FH asked me to marry him on May 25th, It became one of the happiest days of my life.
Time and life go on. You have to do what is right for you. Sad as that day was, there are many other days in history when bad things happened but everyone moved on. I hope whatever you decide, you do it for yourself and not listen to others who may say it is wrong, because what is right for you is wrong for someone else. Good Luck!!

Re: September 11, 2004
Well I'll say this. I wish I had thought of it first.
I survived that day.. worked in that building.. lost good friends and am still recovering from injuries from then.
I wish to god I had thought of it first. Nothing like a good wedding.. a celebration of joy and new beginnings to overcome the darkest day of my life.
Theres a really thick black line in my life time.. and it's drawn right over that date. I really wanted a fall wedding.. so i went with Oct.. But i really wish I had thought of it first.
Besides that.. I'd love to GO to a wedding that.. I mean we ALL know the TV is going to be sad enough, so are the radios and stories retold will be heartwrenching.. there's been enough saddness. I'd like to honor my friend by having a good time!!!
I say it's a WONDERFUL day to get married!!!

I personally think it is your decision to make, not everyone else. For some people 9/11 was not tragic, but maybe a miracle. My brother worked on the 97th floor of the first tower! He was late for work that day... thank God! He lost all of his co-workers. My dad who is a NYC detective was below the building when it was collapsing and he escaped. And I was in the street when the second building fell. So for me it was a lucky day. I truely believe people will grieve, but like someone else posted, a wedding will bring good spirits in replace of sorrowful ones! If people love you they will want to share in your special day no matter when it is! Good luck to you!

Thank you so much for sharing your stories. This makes it much easy for me to get married that day. I know I shouldn't listen to other people and there opinions onto whether I should do it that day....but I too was there when it happened on Wall street and I'm so so thankful to survive the tragedy. I am hoping to shed new light on that day. Thanks again :=)

Similar to Boop....My dad died 8/23/00 and that is the day FI and adopted my cat who I love more than anything. So this Sat. I will be upset and cry but will also think of how one year ago Chloe came into our lives. So it can be ok to share the sad day with a happy one.
On the other hand...a collegue of mines wedding anniversary is 9/11. She hates that the day she celebrates with her husband their many years of marriage is on a day everyone else is mourning. They made the decision to change the date that they celebrate their anniverary to the following week.

I wouldn't do it, I wouldn't even go to a wedding that was on 9/11. But that's just me, had to share my 2 cents...

My only suggestion would be to make sure that those people closest to you wouldn't have a problem with the date. Since FH and I are still throwing the idea around, we asked our parents and siblings, because frankly, if they thought that it would be horrific, we wouldn't do it. Who wants their parents miserable on their wedding day or feeling like it's an ominous day to get married? However, all of our immediate family thought it was a wonderful idea and are 100% behind us if we wind up choosing that date.
Similarly to Boop, as well, FH proposed to me on the 9th anniversary of my grandfather's death, to whom I was very close. He didn't realize what the date was because it was the first time since my grandfather died that I didn't spend the entire day dwelling on it, and actually didn't even realize what day it was until the day after. I firmly believe that somehow my grandfather made it so I didn't think of him that day, because he knew, wherever he may be, that March 28 was going to be a happy day for me and didn't want it tainted with sadness. There's no reason why a sad day cannot be commemorated with a happy occasion.
