September 11 weddings

September 11 weddings

I have heard from several people that many reception sites are drastically lowering their costs for September 11 weddings because of the delicate nature of the date and because so many people do not want to get married on that date. I am trying to plan my 2004 wedding, and was hoping to get married in October, but we are on an extremely tight budget for approximately 150 people, and I was wondering if anyone had heard anything about this. Sept. 11 is a Saturday next year and I would love to be able to get married Saturday night, but obviously the cost is too much. Neither my fiance nor I are adamantly opposed to getting married on Sept. 11, although we are aware that some people will have something to say about it.

Putting aside any emotional or other issues that arise with the mention of that date, does anyone know of a) any specific venues that are discounting their usual prices, and b) how much they are discounting?

Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't. Just my two cents... not worth upsetting anyone. Sorry!

ETA: I see this is your first post, welcome to the boards! Congratulations on your engagement! I have found this website to be a wealth of information, I hope you do too.

I would not either. We were talking about getting married on 9/11/04 before 9/11 but after that we decided that there is no way we could get married on that date.

My son was born on 9/11/2000 so his birthday will always be haunted by this. I can't go anywhere without people commenting (pediatricians office, schools, party places). Don't mar your anniversary with this date and the loss it signifies.

While I appreciate your posts, I'm looking for specific information and not opinions on whether or not to do it. I really don't want to be made to feel bad for simply asking. I do understand what you're saying, but that's not what I am really looking for right now. Thanks.

You really don't want to have the happiest day of your life associated with the worst day in recent history. My FI is a New York City Firefighter and I just imagine people seeing guests at my reception, knowing their minds are elsewhere....just my two cents, I hope it works out for you....

ETA I just read your second post and I'm not trying to make you feel bad...try the north ritz club, Sept 11 is the only sat they have free in 2004

My DH is also with the FDNY. I feel the same way Colleen does. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

We did look at the North Ritz Club and were not very impressed, especially with the woman who helped us. But thank you for the suggestion.

Like I said, I'm only looking at options. Most likely we are having a Sunday wedding in either Oct. or Nov., but I'm the type of person who likes to have all the info in my hands regarding all my possibilities before making a decision.

I certainly didn't mean to invoke any sadness on anyone else's part and hope that I haven't done so.

Re: September 11 weddings

We visited the Atlantica and they were giving us a significant discount to have the wedding there on September 11th. We didn't really care for the place and after thinking about it, we didn't really want the 11th - so we didn't go for it.

I would go to places and feign interest in another date - which, invariably, will be booked and see what they offer you for the 11th. We're really not good bargainers so we didn't do this...nor did we feel brazen enough to just flat out ask what they would do for the 11th - as far as reducing the $$.

Bottom line - you have to do what you need to do. Just be mindful that some people - especially travellers - might be wary of attending your wedding if they need to travel on the 11th or be away from home on the 11th. We did speak to 2 people who were directly affected by September 11th (meaning, one was in Tower 1 and the other was a firefighter that day) and asked how they would feel - they weren't affected...and wanted us to do what we had to do. It might be nice to have a positive come out of that date...after all, people still get married on Pearl Harbor day (12/6 or 18th - don't remember the date ), no?

My fiance is also a NYC fireman, and I have to agree with the above posters. It's just too emotional for people.

I think that if you feel ok about it, you should get married on that day or any day you want! i don't think we would ignore a wedding of a friend just becasue it's on September 11th! you can give that day some positive engery by celebrating your union!

But life does go on....I was in Manhattan on Sept 11th and had to live through the day. But if a close friend's wedding was that day I would go. Life continues whether you like it or not and what better testiment to those lives who where lost then to get married on that day. Show that our lives have continued and will not stop despite the madness that is going on in the world.

I wouldnt. Only b/c some of your guests are bound to have lost someone on that day or know of someone who did, etc...
I think that is why so many halls cant book that day and are lowering

Re: September 11 weddings

I really wanted to get married in October but found there was quite a difference in price between October and November so i went with November. It saved me a ton of money and its just as beautiful. Its another suggestion.

Also, afternoon weddings are beautiful and are cheaper though I know you really want a Sat. night. Keep looking - you'll find something in your range and not have to give up what you want!!!

Good luck!!!

Re: September 11 weddings

I would go and look at places and get a quote for a Saturday night in September (like the 18th). It's an expensive day & time a year so you'll get a high price. Then tell them you like it there but it is over your range. What days/times of year are better. And you can hopefully stumble upon Sept. 11th.

Re: September 11 weddings

Just to be clear, I don't have my heart set on a Saturday night, only because I've always known that it's out of my price range.

Lorimari, could you possibly tell me how big the difference was between an Oct. and Nov. date? I don't need actual prices, just the difference in prices. Thanks!

Re: September 11 weddings

I wouldn't do it. It might be a logistical nightmare for you and your guests. Odds are, even another 2 years from now, Sept. 11th will be a difficult travel day, not only because of flights, but security in tunnels, bridges etc. It will always be beefed up on that day in particular, and if you have anyone coming from out of state, or out of Long Island, it will be difficult to get around.

You also have to ask yourself if you will mind the volume of no responses you will get, because odds are there will be more than the norm...

Leave this poor women alone. All she was asking was a simple question. NOT your option or how it has affected your life or someone elses. It affect ALL of us in different ways and MAYBE this would be a good chance to bring some joy into this world for a day that will never be forgotten. They have been many other tragic event s that have taken place in history and people still get married on those days. And yes Mother's Day Father's Day. New Years Eve, Halloween, easter, ect... Don't just post someone to get another post on your profile. People have feelings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
