I have heard from several people that many reception sites are drastically lowering their costs for September 11 weddings because of the delicate nature of the date and because so many people do not want to get married on that date. I am trying to plan my 2004 wedding, and was hoping to get married in October, but we are on an extremely tight budget for approximately 150 people, and I was wondering if anyone had heard anything about this. Sept. 11 is a Saturday next year and I would love to be able to get married Saturday night, but obviously the cost is too much. Neither my fiance nor I are adamantly opposed to getting married on Sept. 11, although we are aware that some people will have something to say about it.
Putting aside any emotional or other issues that arise with the mention of that date, does anyone know of a) any specific venues that are discounting their usual prices, and b) how much they are discounting?
Thanks in advance!

firsttimer now is the time to start following your mother's advice and not say anything at all....
jannshari, although you did not initially want opinions, later you welcomed them and I commend you for that. It was brave of you to post this and I wish you luck in your planning...

No, that's not what I am doing. If you notice, I have been on this board for many months and do not have that many posts. However, your rudeness has prompted me to open my mouth. People go to these boards to give advice and their opinions. If you don't like it- then tune out-firsttimer!

Annieb, with all due respect, I think your comments towards me were way out of line. First of all, I'm not touchy about anyone's comments. Second of all, I think it was extremely inappropriate for you to characterize my inquiry as an attempt to capitalize on a painful day. Suffice to say, I find that highly insulting, and I'm sure you were simply reacting on an emotional level. Finally, please do not attribute the postings of other people to my state of mind or intentions. It's unfair to both me and the person whom you are talking about. Thanks.

If you want to get married on September 11th, I don't see why not. People ban December 7th for Pearl Harbor??? No. You can relate every date to something great or horrible, life goes on. And not to be insensitive I lost 2 friends from that event.

Re: September 11 weddings
In all honesty, Misty brought up a great point on traffic and logistics of getting to the wedding. That might be tough, but I had not thought of that. That was a valuable contribution to the post.
If you want to get married on 9/11, I hate to be gory about this but you might want to look at the city as a venue location. I bet that they would offer discounts more than an LI location. As it is this year, the nicest hotels in midtown are still open for 9/13. In downtown or midtown, they will probably offer crazy discounts- even the Ritz Carlton Battery Park.
G-d forgive me for saying that. I am suddenly feeling a little bad.

Re: September 11 weddings
Sept20, don't feel bad. I am not considering the city for any date or time, not only because of the money, but because of the logistics of that on any given day. It will cost guests more because they'll likely have to pay for parking, tolls, etc., and my fiance and I grew up on LI, although we've lived or worked in the boroughs for the last 3 years, and really want a LI wedding.
Thanks for the suggestion, though. And really, don't feel bad.

Re: September 11 weddings
Well when I was looking at halls, I was looking for Sept of 04 dates. The manager at Jericho Terrace actually told me he was going to drastically increase the price because he didn't feel right holding a party on that date. (he volunteered the info, we weren't looking for a 9/11 date)
I'm not sure how the other halls are handling it, this was just what I found at one.

Re: September 11 weddings
That's interesting. If he feels so strongly about it, why not simply close the place down for the day, rather than penalize someone by charging them more?

Re: September 11 weddings
I don't have any information on prices for you but I am sure most of the halls at least for the next few years will be offering reduced rates for that date.
I was personally affected by 9/11 and don't think I'll be celebrating anything on that day any time soon, BUT I commend you for even looking into that date, it might be nice to have a happy memory for 9/11 instead of a sad one and to show those *******s that our lives do go on : ).
Good luck in your search!!!

Re: September 11 weddings
I booked at Jericho Terrace and they had that day...along with a few others discounted...I don't know who you spoke to...but honestly, I can't imagine them closing JUST because they are opposed to that date...I think it's cause they can't book it.
I would look around. When I went shopping the first thing I asked were what dates they were looking to get rid of and how much.
I'm paying for my own wedding of 250 people so money talks...
As for the other drama queen...PLEASE!!! ( I guess that's one for me )

Re: September 11 weddings
Would it be possible to hold your wedding during the week?? I have always heard that midweek weddings and affairs were always much much cheaper.
