I have heard from several people that many reception sites are drastically lowering their costs for September 11 weddings because of the delicate nature of the date and because so many people do not want to get married on that date. I am trying to plan my 2004 wedding, and was hoping to get married in October, but we are on an extremely tight budget for approximately 150 people, and I was wondering if anyone had heard anything about this. Sept. 11 is a Saturday next year and I would love to be able to get married Saturday night, but obviously the cost is too much. Neither my fiance nor I are adamantly opposed to getting married on Sept. 11, although we are aware that some people will have something to say about it.
Putting aside any emotional or other issues that arise with the mention of that date, does anyone know of a) any specific venues that are discounting their usual prices, and b) how much they are discounting?
Thanks in advance!

Re: September 11 weddings
We are getting married at the East Wind on a Saturday Afternoon. Originally we were looking at a May Saturday Night. But just by switching the months we saved $15 a head and then by making it day I think it was another $10-15 a head.

Re: September 11 weddings
My FI and I are actually planning a Sept 2004 wedding as well. All of the sites we have lokked at have lowered the per-person cost for a 9/11/04 wedding. We spoke to: Miller Place Inn (I think they have the afternoon booked but the evening open); East Wind said the price would be 'somewhat less' if we wanted 9/11 but my FI & I didn't want that date (this is a personal choice, so if it's fine with you & your FI - I say go for it). The Riviera in Mass offered a 'lower rate' for 9/11 and so did The Irish Coffe Pub; Windows on the Lake and Watermill Inn (but I believe they already booked both afternoon & evenig on that date). Best of luck!! I'm still searching for a hall and September is getting closer by the day!!

Re: September 11 weddings
Firsttimer, thank you for your post. I really didn't intend to start a big thing over this, which is why I asked for specific information, emotions and other things aside.
Bridget&Jimmy, thanks for the $ info. Like I said, my biggest issue is money, so switching months is not necessarily a problem for me, although I don't want to get into drastic weather months. Also, being Jewish, Fri nights and Sat. afternoons are not options for me.
Racksulbride, thanks for the info on the different places. I appreciate it.

Firsttimer, I don't think anyone was badgering her on this post....so tone it down a notch. This is what this site is for, opinions and advice.
Jannshari, if you felt 'badgered' by my post, I apologize, I just felt I should mention what might effect picking that date.
I wish you luck.

I didn't feel badgered. Trust me, I'm a lawyer, it takes a lot for me to feel badgered!
Again, while I do understand the gut reactions people have (and I had them at first, too), I really was only looking for specific information. People are obviously free to share their opinions, but I pretty much know all the opinions out there and didn't want that to affect my decision until after I know whether it's an option that would fit within my budget in the first place.
Leave it to me to pick such a hot topic for my first post.

Re: September 11 weddings
You welcome...With everything else that goes on with the planning of your special day. its not right to say something that might HURT someone else's feelings. Like my Mother told me when I was little' If you have nothing nice to say...Don't say anything at all'
GOOD LUCK
Try the Miller Place Inn they just did the place over and it's wonderful.
Only one wedding at a time and great food....

Firsttimer, I don't see what you're all upset about. Noone attacked the woman, we gave our opinions, which is what this site is about. Not everyone is about racking up their number of posts, and I don't see how that has anything to do with this....and as far as mother's day and father's day are concerned I have no idea what that has to do with 9-11...relax

Again...no one said anything 'bad', people were HONEST, which is why people ask for opinions in the first place, no?

Re: September 11 weddings
Hrm.. Well let me add this.
A) Oct Sat morning for me (2004) is running me $65 pp. But Im only counting on 100 ppl. Just to give you a ball park.
B) My Fiance and I are paying for this whole thing. And we aint rich. So I feel your pain on trying to make your day wonderful and right, for a price.
C) Unlike others, I wont say I knew someone (Family or friend) affected by 9/11. I'll say this, I have this real nice set of scars and aching pain physically reminding me every day that I survived that nightmare.
I, personally, would LOVE if you got married then. I'm tired of people changing their lives for those *******s. That was their whole point to begin with.
So I say if it saves you cash and you get your dream wedding GO FOR IT!!!!

Re: September 11 weddings
I'm sorry, but what exactly was it that was said that would hurt someone's feelings? I voiced an opinion on a subject as did others. And if you disagree with what I said, Firsttimer, one lesson you really should learn now is that when planning your wedding, you can't just take your own feelings into account, but those of your guests also. You don't have a big wedding without the people there to celebrate it with you, which is why I brought it up to Jannshari. If you can't handle opinions don't post or read.
Now back to the issue, Jannshari, November through March are notoriously less expensive. Other places to check out that people on this site have mentioned repeatedly as being more affordable is the Manor East, the Metropolitan (I've been there and it's great!) as well as the Swan Club in the off months.
Good luck!

Re: September 11 weddings
You may want to check out the Milleridge Inn. They are very open to price negotiation in my experience. They offer significant discounts for off-season weddings and may do the same for 9/11. When I booked I asked if they could lower the price per person by $5 a head and they did. That difference paid for my DJ!

Re: September 11 weddings
Jannshari,
I wish you the best with your planning. Come over to 2004 chit chat for further prices. It might help and just maybe not be this back and forth stuff.
Good luck!

Re: September 11 weddings
Xelyndria and all others who were either personally affected or know someone who was - I am truly, deeply sorry for any pain that Sept. 11 has brought to you or those you love. My fiance and I are EXTRAORDINARILY lucky that neither of us were directly affected or know anyone who was directly involved. We both know that there will be some people who will choose not to come or will have some not-so-nice things to say about it. We are prepared to deal with that IF it turns out to be a viable option. That is a big if.
We were both very much emotionally affected by the events. We will never forget what the date represents and we will never forget what happened that day. However, remembrance doesn't always have to be sad, nor should that day mean nothing but sorrow.
I thank you all for your opinions, whether they helped me or not. I'm a firm believer that we're all entitled to our opinions, and I can certainly choose to ignore those with whom I don't agree.
