September 11 wedding?

Original post by eren718

so im surprised I couldnt find a more recent post about this (last was 2004). Is anyone getting married on September 11/ how do you feel about the date? Its one of the only fridays left at a hall i love and the price is INSANE compared to their usual friday night price. This makes me think people are still hesitant abut the date but just wondering what the ladies think....I personally have no problem with it (I think the only reason we even remember the exact day is bc it specifically termed 'the sept 11 attacks') FH doesnt love it but loves the price , haha

i added a poll but thoughts are welcome...

i wouldn't just bc i wouldn't want my anniversary to be on such a sad day in history...

Ditto. I wouldn't want to be really happy and excited while having to deal with the media talking about it CONSTANTLY or listening to other people talk about it all day (both day of and in the future). It would really get me down.

Plus, while no one in my family died, we have people who were involved directly and it was a really traumatizing thing. It's treated sort of like a yearly day of mourning in my family.

I wouldn't do it, I just couldn't. But even if you are OK with it you might invite guests who aren't going to feel right about attending or who won't be able to attend. Like PP said, it's a sad day esp in NY. Remember that there's a good reason that the prices are so much lower on that date.

In my personal opinion, I think its a bad day to have a wedding. The horror of the day is burned into people's minds forever. Prob why it's so cheap....

If I lost a very close loved one, I wouldn't do it. Otherwise, I say go for it. It's a chance to celebrate life. Look at it this way, there are plenty of people who get married on Pearl Harbor Day.

I agree....like another poster said don't put the numeral 9/11 write it out as September Eleventh and maybe as your favor do a donation to the FDNY.

I don't think there's ANY problem whatsoever with having your wedding on Sep 11th. Why not? I mean, yes, that's a date that we will always remember and respect when it comes around, but life goes on. We shouldn't all just sit in silence every year on that day. My mother's birthday is on 9/11. We still celebrate it without hesitation. That would be horrible to act all dark & quiet when it's always been her birthday. The fact that it's now the anniversary of something terrible & sad does not change the fact that we will still celebrate with her. I hope I'm not offending anybody who was affected by 9/11 personally, but I do honestly feel that life goes on and we need to continue living. So that's my opinion at least. It's perfectly FINE to have your wedding on that day and to celebrate it as your anniversary every year following.

I couldn't do it either. All that would be in my mind that day are the attacks.

Being that my husband works on Wall Street, I still worry sometimes.

I personally, wouldnt do it b/c September 11th will always be remembered as the day the towers went down and many lives were lost

I just couldn't imagine doing it.....I don't think it's morally wrong....I just don't think I would want that as my anniversary.

I would do it...I think it is very important to remember what happend on 9/11 but part of healing is to move forward...

ITA. I totally agree with someone else who mentioned that the date 9-11 is imprinted in our minds because it was called the 9/11 attacks. For the life of me i can't remember the date of the first WTC bombing or the oklahoma city one.

It depends on what your personal connection is with it. I don't have anyone who was involved in that so if it were me i'd be ok with that date.

This topic has me thinking so i'm gonna edit this.

IMO, and again this is just my opinion, whatever friends/family members were lost in this tragedy might be thinking, 'hey.. enjoy your life to the fullist and move on because you really don't know when it's gonna end.'

If saving a lot of $ and having the wedding of your dreams is living your life to the fullest then i would 100% have it on that day.

I would do it so long as none of your close guests or a number of your guests are NYPD or FDNY or lost loved ones.

I personally think enough time has already passed to have the same date. I know two people who have their bday that day and the first year or two we thought ohh man that stinks but now no one even says anything (I know that's a lil diff since you don't pick your bday but you get the point).

Also, I feel like people remember/observe the 9/11 attacks in the morning- that's when there is the moment of slience, the name reading on tv, etc. If anyone noticed there was hardly and 9/11 news specials on in the evening this year.

If you do it I would definitely stay away from putting 9/11 on any things like matches and napkins. September Eleventh Two Thousand Whatever, (like on your invites) looks much better.

I would honestly do it. I really wanted to get married in June and if 6/6 was 9/11 and the only reasonably priced evening in the month I would have done it. I'm not saying I wouldn't think about it at all but I don't think it's disrespectful or tacky or anything like that.

I third that...

I wouldnt be able to do it. As a NY'er I would'nt want my anniversary to be shared with the worst attack on NY in history. When I worked downtown I hated going to work on 9/11. It's a personal preference, but many people that I know where directly or indirected affected by it so it wouldnt be right for me to do it on that day.
If this day works for you and your FH then go for it. There is nothing wrong with the date.
