Serious question re: a loved one who won't go to the Dr.

My FH's grandma said she has been having bad chest pains. This is a woman who NEVER complains of any kind of illness. When she is sick, with the flu or something, she's takes a short nap here and there and then is back on her feet and active.

So to hear her say she had chest pains means they were probably pretty bad. Of course we were like 'You HAVE to go to the Dr.' And she says 'No, I'll be fine.' Then she got really really angry when we insisted and finally we stopped.

Can we make her go? I think I know the answer is no, but I really am afraid she'll have a heart attack.

Can you maybe call her doctor and see if he/she will convince her to go??

The problem is she doesn't have a Dr. She never goes. There is someone she saw about 10 years ago, but that was it.

I'm sorry.... I wouldn't pester her about it; but I would bring it up every now and then.

Hrmm..

My uncle was the same way, no doctors. So is my father. I have been known to drive my father there totally unawares. Usually he's pissed but I do the old crying and pleading 'Daddy I love you, please do this for me.. Im frightened.'

Honestly it's true. He used to be a lot heavier and i'd always worry. I want him to be a grandpa to my children. I want him to see me marry.. so forth. I want him there. It usually worked.. I'd literally cry.

Health is important. I'd rather it be a false alarm.

I'm sorry to say that unfortunately they have to want to help themselves - FIL thinks he is ABOVE going to dr's and would NEVER go unless REALLY sick - so DH told me FIL hadn't been to a dr in like 8-10 years. Well DH FINALLY convinced him (after weeks of begging) to go because he was not feeling well and SMIL had breast cancer the year before etc - so last year he FINALLY goes only to find out he had colon cancer. Needless to say he is in remission and it could have been MUCH worse - but this is the reason they tell you to have annual physicals so that they can try to head off any problems before they get bad.

Anyway point of that story is that you can sit down and explain how important it is to you for her to go but unless she wants to she won't go until she is ready.

OMG Christine your story illustrates the point - imagine how much worse things would be if yuor FIL didn't go to the Dr. I am glad he went and got treatment.

Thanks everyone..I think I will continue to ask her to go. She can get mad at me, and maybe eventually I will stop, but I have to try.
