Serious Topic-War and wedding plans

Original post by karenJ

Guys,
My parents are very worried about the impact of war in my wedding plans. They are suggesting that with all this unstability in the world that my wedding may be ruined. It is scaring me since I experienced the whole Sept 11 thing first hand (I worked a block way) and the same feelings are coming back. They do not mean to but are being realistic I guess.

I am curious to know how other brides are feeling expecially the ones getting married soon.

Re: Serious Topic-War and wedding plans

I am glad that you posted this topic. Lately, things have gotten quite scary warwise. There's a lot of troops being deployed and a lot of people being activated out of the reserves.

We have quite a few good friends (including members of the wedding party) who have been activated and called us recently to tell us that they may not be able to make our wedding. I told them not to worry, that I am not in any way freaking out about the wedding. But we are worried about their safety and they will certainly be missed. Also, I have a lot of family that was planning to come from all over the world and I'm worried about them.

So, it's comforting to know that I'm not alone. This site is all about taking care of each other and a place to reach out for support.

Karen:

I completely understand you because it is not only the possible war in Middle East; there are many countries going through a hard time and that might affect people's plans. In my case, my parents, and closest friends live in Venezuela.... And that place is doing so bad politically, that the USA embassy closed; they took most of its personal out of the country. Therefore, my parents and unable of getting a visa to come ... and unless a miracle happens, the country becomes politically safe, and the embassy reopens, only my brother who is now studying here will be who will give me away.

Of course this makes me very sad, because my father's wish won't be fulfilled ... and I can't postpone my wedding indefinitely until things change.... This might not happen any time soon. I even think in further into the future … and although we worry, we can’t but take a step at a time, and hope for the best.

You are not alone with those thoughts, you can be sure that many of us share your worries, not because we are materialistic, but because we want to share a very important day in our lives with the people we love, and we do care about their health and their safety.

Karen, I can completely understand your fears, and those of your parents. They are justified. We are living in a world that is very unstable and IMO, very frightening.

The threat of war affects all of us. I think your feelings are justified.

My DH and I were just beginning our wedding planning in Sept. 2001. Like so many of us, I was downtown that terrible day-under the WTC catching my PATH train to work in Jersey City.

At first I wanted to put our plans on hold. There was just too much sadness in our lives. The wedding seemed a little frivolous to me. Friends and I sat down and talked it out and I realized that I absolutely could not put off our wedding. We can mourn and promise to never forget, but we have to go on living. In the midst of tragedy, it is the small miracles that we need to keep hope for.

About two weeks later, we booked our hall and didn't look back after that. It was nice to have something bright in our lives to talk about. I learned to look forward to the promise of a wonderful day marking the beginning of our lives together.

I guess I'm taking a long time to simply say go on with your plans, go on with your life...you have to!!
