DH was laid off about 2 weeks ago. He had no contract and never read/signed any policies regarding severance or paid time off etc (the co doesn't have one). His boss said they would give him something. It's been 2 weeks and he has not heard anything. DH contacted him and he said he can't meet this week either. Is there anything he can do?

Re: Severance Question
Not really. Severance is a courtesy. His boss sounds shady.

It was a full time position. He was there for 4 years.

Re: Severance Question
Did he see this coming at all? Does he work for a larger company?
We've been anticipating layoffs for 2 months (they started today) and we recieved 3 notices regarding severence in that time...he should have known before he left what he'd be getting.
I'm sorry!

He is shady! If he was going to give him something then it would have happened already. They were really unprofessional about the whole lay-off.

is this a larger organization? if so, he should get his hands on a company 'rules and regulations' book.
who hired him? his manager or someone who acted like an HR person? severance is not necessarily guaranteed, but most companies will at least throw one a minimum 2 week bone...
if he was on payroll, he is eligible to receive unemployment benefits.
Dh got his severance and days off when he signed his 'contract' -- I think they gave him 2 weeks to do this...(which he extended due to we were leaving for our HM and he was negotiating with them - he got an extra month)
In some scenarios you can negotiate severance packages...just FYI

Re: Severance Question
I guess without a contract or anything it's really up to his boss. This stinks!

Re: Severance Question
Like someone said earlier severance is a courtesy. Even if the organization has a policy on severance, there is usually a disclaimer that absolves them of giving packages if the co is in financial trouble.
They should however pay him for any vacation days that he has accured. Also he should go to the unemployment office ASAP to file a claim, so he can start recieving checks in the next two week. Does he have anything in writing from the boss about signing anything?
Good Luck.
When I was laid off last June, my company gave us 60 days to review the severance package and consult with a lawyer and during this time we received full pay and benefits. And the end of the 60 days, if we signed they gave us 2 weeks salary for every year of service plus COBRA subsidy for 3 months and vacation pay. If people didn't sign they gave them 2 weeks pay and vacation pay. I must say that I lucked out with the package that I recieved bc I was in the first round of layoffs.
