I'm not saying that at all actually. Its about knowing the menaing of the song and what it was used for before blindly choosing to use just b/c it is a tradition.

The song was written and used in a opera 'bedroom' scene.

I just think one should understand the meaning of the song before the choose it as 'the' song on their special day. Thats all.

I see your point totally. I think quite a few brides do know about the origins. I've read several Jewish Brides threads and it's an absolute no-no for a traditional Jewish ceremony.

I see your point too. I am sorry if it seemed I was making a big deal over it. But just still surprised its used so often when there are soo many other beautiful songs.

Like somebody else already said in this thread. You act as if brides choosing this song think about the origin of the song. The only thing they do think about the song is the tradition of it. Many have no idea about its origin or know much about the composer. The only thing known is that it is the song used for many generations for the bride to walk down the aisle.

If you want to think about the origin of things, im curious if you ever owned a Louis Vuitton bag? and are as against people having one, would you ever drive or have you ever driven a BMW, VW, or Mercedes? or do you have any krups products at home, any on your registry? IF youre going to hate things for their origin then you can do it about so many other things in this world.

To say you're shocked and appalled and post this to put others down for their decision, a decision that I am sure most have no idea about the origins, was the wrong way to go about it. If you wanted to inform people and just put it out there then that would've been different.

I am sorry if I 'offended' anyone with my post. I was simply just venting. I have been to a lot of weddings lately and was surprised at how often it was played to be honest.

I know most churches and temples will not allow this song to be used. And in Europe I know this tradition has been long since gone. I thought by now the same was true for here. That's all.

I apologize if I offended anyone...

P.S. I don't have a ford, VW, and I have never owned a Louis Vutton bag... LOL!

No krups either.

Well I wouldn't say EUROPE, bc saying saying the whole continent of europe stopped using it doesnt really make sense. First of all, ALL of Europe didnt use this song at any time in history. I am european, my parents were not born here and I can tell you for a fact that 'here comes the bride' is not used now nor was it EVER used in history. Its not part of my cultural tradition, my mother didnt even think of this as an option when she got married in 'EUROPE' lol bc well nobody used it...i am christian orthodox and first of all ceremonies are COMPLETELY different period.

But are you as against people who use or have any of those things? If youre going to be against brides using 'here comes the bride' then why not be against anyone for having those things? Maybe you dont have it but youre telling me you dont know anybody who owns a Louis Vuitton bag, do you say anything to them about it. Do you know anybody who drives any of those type of cars? are you shocked at them and upset they drive those cars?

i think thats the point others are trying to point out.

I am not Jewish, nor would I really take the time to look up the background of a particular composer. Though, it was interesting to find out the origins. With that said, I will be using HCTB as my processional since that's what FH wants, and that's fine with me. I love this site because I normally feel a form of camaraderie with my fellow brides, however, this post gave me a bitter taste to think that someone is, in essence, putting me down for my choice of song. This will be a happy day for us regardless of how the composer lived his life so many years ago.

ITA with everything you said...
There was definitely a more tactful way for the OP to make her point. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but there is a thin line between stating how you feel and insulting others. Just for the record, I will be using HCTB. I know that you didn't mean to offend, and I'm sorry to say it, but you did.

I had no idea. I think less than 1% of the world would know that. I mean, the song is called 'Here Comes the Bride', not 'All Hail Hitler.' Its not like brides are running down the aisle draped in the SS Flag

Using the song is fine IMO. To each his/her own

I used it---I guess I am more ignorant then you are since I did.

I highly doubt that there are many people that know that, let alone care-I understand where you are coming from but composing a song meant for a 'bride' and not using it for this reason to me is a little odd. But then again-alot of people are using a different song for their entrance

Re: Shocked!

There were MANY composers who were anti-semites and we use and listen to their classical music all the time! They are in commercials, in movies, at weddings and funerals. This doesn't mean anyone is supporting the NAZI regime! I knew that Wagner was one of them and it never crossed my mind to boycott the song because of that...it's ridiculous to imply that people are ignorant because they follow tradition.

It's not that serious.. if you don't like the song, or what it represents, there are plenty of other beautiful songs to walk down the aisle to..

Sorry just a rant. But I am still shocked (and horrified) at how many weddings still chose to play the Here Comes the Bride song! I know its tradition but Wagner (the composer of the song) was a well documented (Nazi) anti-semite. (I personally am not jewish but I am appalled by this).

Why would you want such a beautiful and special day to begin with this???

I understand its traditional but if you look into it the song and where it was used in his opera its rather appalling that people still chose this as their song.

(not to mention that Wagner was a chauvnist pig)

I apologize in advance if I made anyone angry by this rant but I personally find this so upsetting.

For those that didn't know, look into it yourself and think twice before using this on your most special day.

Edit: grammar.

How about let's not start drama over something as insignificant as this......Why don't we just read it for FACE VALUE and not criticize this poor bride for pointing something out that most of us didn't realize!

I don't think anyone is starting drama... If anything, it seems like the intent of the OP was to criticize, not to educate. If she wanted to educate us on the origin of the song, she wouldn't have stated how horrified she is at a tradition that most brides on this site follow. I'm sorry, but there was just a better way of saying it and I don't blame people for being offended by it.

Re: Shocked!

Wow, I just stumbled upon this thread a few days late I guess...

I just want to say that to me, this song represents my dream as a little girl to walk down the aisle with my dad on my wedding day.

Finding out that the composer was not a good man does not change the feeling I get when I think about that moment.

I understand this person's point of view, but am disappointed that she felt it necessary to rant about it on this site knowing how many brides walk down the aisle to the song.

I am going to try my best to forget I even read it.

Seriously?

Well I'm shocked and offended by this post. I think it's insulting. And I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one that finds your little lesson there to be a bit much.

Re: Shocked!

I don't want to add to the drama in this thread.

But, I think there are alot of traditions that brides use and they have no idea where they come from. Like what a honeymoon is supposed to be, why the bride wears white and a veil, why they use flowers, the purpose of a bridesmaid......

There are many things that have just been adopted into tradition and accepted without most people realizing the meanings behind them.

It's not a bad thing. There is not reason to get outraged over it. Most brides have very little time to research every single tradition that takes place at a wedding, such as the meaning behind the cake cutting, the garter and bouquet toss, the groom's cake origin, etc. They just do it because it seems like a nice thing.

From what I can tell, the OP is a fairly new poster. I'm sure when she posted the message, she didn't realize it would stir up these reactions. Once being a new poster, I too didn't realize that saying certain things in certain ways can come off as rude of offensive.

To the OP, I think ppl are just a bit miffed and offended the way you came across. It's one thing to educate the girls and say something like 'hey girls, fyi this is who composes the song hctb, and he's a blah blah blah' and it's another thing to judge by saying this is a rant and 'I'm so shocked that ppl are still using this song and it's apalling' ---it's not like everyone knew about this song and are purposely walking down to it with pride....

Thank you for the lesson you were trying to educate us on, but it could have been worded with a little more taste rather than coming off as judgemental.
