Re: Shocked!

As a Jewish bride, there is no way I would walk down the aisle to this song. My Rabbi also made me promise not to use it. However, I'm honestly not shocked at all that so many people continue to use it, even if they are informed.

A lot of people chose to do things that are in some way related to horrific things that happened in the past be it the Holocaust, slavery, etc. You just need to decide for yourself based on what is important to you. I also favor freedom of choice, even if I don't like or agree with the choice made.

On a lighter note, what are you using instead? We are pretty set on 'Think of Me' (Phantom) for the bridal party and are still wavering about my procession.

I never even considered using 'here comes the bride'. I didn't know who composed it, but I didn't like it for me.

I'll be using Canon in D.

I hate to fall into this ridiculous post, but I have to point out one thing.... this was not a vent on your part... IMO, all I see is an extremely preachy and judgemental post. And for your information, out the 15 weddings I've been to in the last 5 years, I would say 75% of those have used 'Here Comes the Bride' and most of those ceremonys took place IN A CHURCH.

I'm using this song to walk down the aisle to. Just because about a million years ago it was written about something specific, it's still art and it's still subjective so it means different things to different people. If you choose to look at it the way it was intended by the artist than that's fine, but do NOT judge me for looking at it and interpreting it in a different way and using it as part of my wedding ceremony.

Not to be harsh, but get over yourself.

My organist will actually not play if for a wedding or in the church at all. He sends you a whole list of songs that are inappropriate and even called this pagan. FYI!

sorry, but i think that is ridiculous

it really is ridiculous. do you realize basically every wedding tradition that we practice today, has a somewhat 'offensive origin'? Are you wearing a white gown, or wearing a veil? A veil was used to mask the girl's 'ugliness', so the groom wouldnt bolt on the alter when he saw her. Is FH having a best man? In ancient times a best man's role was to protect the groom if he had to resort to kidnapping his bride from her family.

Are you doing a garter or bouquet toss? Tradition says that right after the marriage, the bride and groom were forced to 'consumate' the marriage immediately, and to make it official, there were to be witnesses to this. This lead to a crowd of people surrounding the couple while having sex, pulling and shoving to get a better view, in hopes to get a 'piece of the brides dress, as it was ripped off her body.' They thought this would bring them fortune.

It evolved into the groom tossing the garter to the guests waiting outside this room, to prove he was going to complete the act.

cnn just had a big article on this. I am not a Nazi, but I just dont think playing that song is wrong.

To each their own........
