Should have probably set an earlier date.

Original post by smm1129

So I got engaged in August, but in my mind I've been engaged since January. I've always wanted a fall wedding, but after many many discussions, I said to FH, wouldn't it be cool to have a 12/13/14 wedding? He agreed, and it ended up that we actually booked that date. I love it and couldn't be happier with what we picked. Now, I have my photographer, and an idea of who I want for my DJ, but everyone is telling me to slow down and that not everything has to be done right away, since the wedding is a year and 2 months away (a year and a half in everyone else's eyes, not sure why? lol). I'm a planner, and I am constantly living in the future. Anyone else feeling this, and if so, any ideas on how I should RELAX? I'm just so excited, I can't help it!!

Do it all now! You will not run out of things to do. Little things will need to be done towards the end and you do not want them compounded by big things. I'm a little over 2 months out and my stress is through the roof.....I can't even imagine how I'd be if I still had big stuff left.

I agree with the PP who said get ready to be annoyed with everyone. I've had an 18 month engagement and I can still hardly get people to care; when I was booking things 17 months out all I got was a hard time. Ignore em!

You plan away if that's what you want to do! My future in-laws thought I was hoping the gun a little bit when we started looking at venues within a week and a half of getting engaged. My feeling was and still is I want us to choose our vendors based on who we like best...not whose left for our date.I'm a very detail oriented person and OCD planner. Now that most of our major vendors are booked we have the time to focus on all the small details that will really make the decor complete. Also, unexpected things are going to come up so now you'll have the time to deal with all of it and keep your sanity too!

I'm in the same boat as you! I just got engaged in August and set the date for November 2014--I booked the venue and church last week, and now am really anxious to book all the other major vendors too...but I also get the comments to slow down and relax from others. I'm a planner by nature and I would also be really upset if vendors were booked on my date. It also seems like there's so many little things that add up and keep you really busy right up until the date, so I don't think there's any harm in getting major things set.

Don't listen to other people it's best to get things done ahead of time so you can pick what you want most. I'm getting married in May 2015 and our original date in Sept 2015 was already booked at our venue. I think people are starting to plan further in advance.

there's nothing wrong with getting a head start. I got engaged 2 years before our date and now I'm less than a year out and pretty much just working on small details and payments. it's so nice not to have to rush or stress out later on.

No harm at all.. I paced myself, but I booked everything way early.. I haven't done anything that the vendor hasn't said 'well you have plenty of time'

Just be prepared to be annoyed with everyone lol. People don't want to talk about your wedding until they are themselves getting excited, so don't be disappointed when your in-laws don't want to hear about your limos yet. Now that we are about 9 months away, everyone has questions and excitement and I am like too bad, I did everything already and booked every vendor of my choice...for 2012/2013 prices too!

This is so true! No one cares, haha. This is probably part of the reason I'm feeling bummed, and when it comes time for them to ask, I'll be over the excitement lol!

When we got engaged in August of 2012 we decided on 12/13/14 at Floral Terrace too - you're lucky we didn't go with that date!! haha Once I realized how far away it was - almots 2 1/2 years, I decided to change it. There was no way I wanted to wait that long and I have a lot of family coming from out of state and didn't want to risk them not being about to make it because of weather.

I definitely don't think you're waiting too long though - a year and two months will fly by before you know it! I can't believe I've already been engaged over a year and my wedding is so close. You'll be happy you've gotten a lot done as the time gets closer.

That's too funny! I was actually so nervous for some reason that venues wouldn't have anything in late 2014 available, because I didn't want a spring or summer wedding, I would have booked on my birthday (11/29) which falls on a Saturday. I was saying but if I HAVE to go to fall 2015, then so be it... but I think I would have gone crazy as well waiting almost 2 1/2 years. Thank you for leaving the date open for me.

I agree 100% and I know I'll be relaxed and less stressed a year from now, I just don't think some people understand today's planning process. For example I had to have a photographer ASAP. But try explaining to your parents who have no clue what weddings entail now a days that you need an engagement shoot if you want to use those pics for your save the date. They have no idea what a save the date is.

Giirrrlllll whaddup date twin! I've been engaged since 12/13/12 and had all my major vendors booked within 6 weeks of being engaged.

My venue, photographer and DJ have all been booked since February and I had a nice time relaxing (and saving). Now we just took our e-pics and waiting for them so we can do our STDs which were sending out in November bc of holidays and wanting all the OOT guests to have ample time to book and take dates off. Since it's a hot date and close to the holidays... I say don't wait!

YES! I don't know about you but when people ask, I tell them I like the date best of all. Very easy for FH to remember. He's so proud that he's yelling it out to people, because if it was any other date he'd have to ask me to remind him

The venue, photographer and DJ are definitely the most important to me to get done ASAP as well. All I have left is the DJ and I pretty much know who I want to book, but I want to save a little more first. I'm having nightmares that the DJ shows up to my wedding with no music, but I feel like once I book them, those will stop and I'll start having nightmares about the next vendor I have to book.

Very true, I'm a naturally organized person and planner, but when crisis comes forth, I really do not handle it well. It could be something so small and I'll have a breakdown, so I'm going to need all the mental strength I have lol! Also, I've been on this site since May, scouring venues & vendors day after day so the day I got engaged and my mom asked if I thought of places, I already had my top 5 plus all my top vendors in my head. I also think planning ahead makes things a lot easier for FH, because although he loves to participate in the planning and is super excited, he really doesn't have as strong of an opinion that I do on certain things. At the end of the day me and my MOH are doing all of the research and leg work.. and will include him in the final choices, where he just usually sits and agrees, so at the end of the day its a win/win lol!
