should i feel guilty? ring related LONG (sorry, need advice)
Original post by KarinAmanda
ok so here's the deal ...
FH picked out my engagement ring all by himself. and that alone makes it the most precious piece of jewelry that i will ever own - short of my wedding band. I love it, dont get me wrong, but it isnt exactly what I would have picked. He knew I wanted princess cut and also pave around the center stone ... so he thought I would love my ring, which i do, I just would have picked something more vintage.
recently, i noticed that my ring is getting YELLOW on the bottom of the band, palm side!! I brought it to the jewelry store where FH bought it and they said its NORMAL? After 5.5 months!!! The owner said that since the ring is white gold, the Rodium wears off and it needs to be 're-rodiumized'. Now I can understand this maybe a few years down the road, but 5.5 months? My concern is that this is something I will have to do 2 times a year! I would have to have my ring sent out for 10 days, 2 times a year? NO WAY
SO ... i've been thinking about taking it somewhere else to have it re-set in Platinum ... to have the Diamonds put into a completely new band. Of course FH agrees it would be a good idea, but he thought we would try and have a band made to look exactly like mine but only in Platinum. Of course in my mind ... this is my oppertunity to have my diamonds re-set so they would look more vintage, more like the ring of my dreams! Is that wrong? I feel totally guilty but its sorta like this is the oppertunity...
1. Is it wrong to have the diamonds re-set differently, not like my ering is now BUT with the same stones - just more vintage looking?
2. can someone recommend a jeweler who does this kind of work?

first off i just looked at your ring and i think it is beautiful. im sure you feel the same way. if you are going to move the diamonds out anyway, i dont see anything wrong with doing it the way you want it. otherwise you will always have it in the back of your mind that you want it a certain way.

Thats actually the ring my FH got me when he first proposed! long story and most people don't understand why he did this, but he got me a ring to propose with and then took me out to pick my dream ring! Isn't the setting on that ring sort of high set? it always got stuck on my clothes and everything, don't get me wrong its gorgeous i love it! but if you find a place that can do that for you deifnatly let me know!!

mine is white gold too. i have had the rodium thing done once since i got it. it only turns a little yellow on the palm side. never on the top. white gold does that. but i dropped it off and picked it up in 3 hours - 10 days is ridiculous.
you can change it if you want, personally i wouldn't change my ring for anything. it's from him that's all that matters to me no one is looking at the palm side lol but that's just me

FH and I had the same problem...( but, you shouldnt have to send your ring out to get Rhodiumed...there are some places that will do it for you in a few minutes!).
In 4 months I had to have it done once, and when they did it, they polished off all of my antique detail, I was VERY upset.
After talking with FH, we decided to get a new platinum setting. I felt awful, and I new FH was upset as well...but to me, I never want to change my wedding band...and, if in the future the ring continued to give me problems, we both new we would have to change it and get a new setting.
So, FH bought me a new platinum setting ( which was virtually identical to my original setting bc I love it so much). Fh is going to take the original setting and use the diamonds to make me a set of earings for our wedding day.
HTH!

this is a toughie, take your time as you decide & listen to his feelings on it but also read him (we are all real good at reading fh's lol, when they say black is good, but really mean green~we know! ) to see how the change will go over...i know how you feel, i always pictured myself with a solataire, i mentioned to fh many times i liked them most, but when it came time for him & my father to choose a setting, they choose one with side stones, at first i was a little thrown off, but it really did grow on me to the point where i can't picture myself with any other ring~
