Should I get my deposit back?

Should I get my deposit back?

Hi everyone, I'm in a little bit of a dilemma right now with Macy's and I just wanted to get your opinions or advice on the situation. So I was there trying on dresses a couple weeks ago and I found one that I 'liked', but didn't love. However, the lady at the store put a veil on my head that I really though I loved with that dress. So I said, 'well I dont know about the dress, but maybe I should just buy the veil today?' This is kinda silly, but I guess I didn't realize how silly it is to buy a veil without a dress and I wish that the professionals at Macy's would not have encouraged me to do this! I placed $150 deposit down on a $280 dollar veil, and the next day I went to Kleinfelds where I found the perfect dress and fell in love with the matching veil that goes perfectly with it! I called macy's the next day, but they insisted that I speak with the lady who sold me the veil and call back the next day. I leave several messages and she does not call me back for a few days, then I call her back and she is not there. This goes back and forth all week, and finally I had enough and just asked them 'can I get my deposit back since I was just there last week and veils are not specially ordered.' They said 'NO'. They have not even offered me a store credit and said I lost my $150.
Now, I'm thinking I should just cancel all 5 of the bridesmaid dresses from that store, which I know have not been ordered yet because 3 of my girls have not even called with their measurements yet. Has anyone else had a similar situation or have any advice?
Sorry for the long post...$150 is just a lot for me to lose.
Thank you!

I don't think you'll get it back ... you put a deposit down on something and that is what usually happens. Sorry!

you will lose your deposit but you can switch it to something else. If there is a headpiece or something you can put it towards that.

and if the girls put money down on their dresses and you cancel that they will also lose that money.

Which Macy's? They told me if I put a deposit on a dress (Smithhaven mall) and changed my mind, I could put it towards anything else (i.e. veil, MOB, etc.)

Tell them you know they have done this for other brides and if they don't, you will contact the Better Business Bureau, pull your BM order, and will post all about it on theknot, here, etc.

That's so annoying. Did you have to put so much as a deposit?
My friend wants to get her bm dresses from Macy's. I hope we don't have a problem.
Can't you speak with someone other than the sales lady???

If 3 of the girls haven't ordered their dresses yet, put the $150 towards that and have them just give you their deposit money.

In my experience all bridal shops have this policy not just Macy's. They will usually allow you to put the money toward another purchase at the store. If you plan tot order your BM dresses there see if they will allow you to use the money toward the dresses.

I would ask to speak to a manager... there was no reason to sell you a veil knowing you didn't have a dress... if the store doesn't want to lose the money for the BM dresses, then they should refund it for you.

So we called back and spoke with a manager. They were very difficult and defensive about it. They aren't even offering a store credit at this point. Then the sales lady called back a few hours later just to say how annoyed and offended she was that I spoke to the manager.

Oh but at the end of the conversation they said they will call the manufacturer and get back to me monday. So I'll let you know what happens. I would like to have that money put towards a bridesmaid dress or something else.

Good luck! I would call the manager again and complain about the sales woman. There is no reason why she should've called you. That was rude!

If you charged it, contact your credit card company and dispute the charges. If you paid by cash, it's going to be difficult to try to get Macy's to put it back as store credit. If the manager is giving you a hard time, try to go through the head of the Return/Exchanges Dept. and see if they can do anything for you. If all else fails, you can always file a complaint with BBB as well as a letter to the headquarters of Macy's.

thats ridiculous- i cant stand all the rules around bridal- its all to make $$$$- they should at LEAST give you a store credit to be used towards something else.... i would just tell them you'll stand for nothing less then a store credit- i mean you did order all your BM dresses there- the least they could do was TRY to work with you...so rude!

Re: Should I get my deposit back?

Update--
So they were supposed to call me back today and let me know what happened with the manufacturer and whether they would actually be able to refund any money or give me a store credit. Not surprised that nobody returned my call. I'm going to call them in a little bit to find out whats going on, but in the meantime I did contact my credit card company who says that they have to at least offer me a store credit and that this is disputable so at least I can proceed through my credit card company if Macy's does not try to work with me. I will also not be buying the BM dresses from there any more if they do not offer me credit.

Just wanted to say that I'm sorry this happened to you. You should definitely be able to put that deposit towards something else. I would call the manager's boss and keep going up the ladder until they do something to work with you!!! I would also go down in person to speak to these people.

I'd just be careful because if you signed anything at the time that you put down the deposit or if the receipt states that its non-refundable you usually can not get the money back as its considered a binding contract. My coworker is dealing with a similar veil situation right now. Best of luck.

I agree with posts above, you should be able to put the money towards something else. Don't let them take your money like that, I would fight it and make them allow me to use that money towards a different dress....maybe MOB or MOH dress or even a headpiece or something.
