Should I see a doctor?

Late Saturday night I stubbed my smallest toe into the bookcase in our living room. (Slick move, right?) I thought it hurt more than usual and sure enough, yesterday morning I woke up with a big purple spot on my toe near the base where the next bigger toe starts. It's swollen, it throbs, but I can bend it a little. I'm home today and I'm keeping ice on it. It's feeling better than yesterday, but should I go to the doctor? Even if it is broken, they can't really do anything, can they? I'm one of those stubborn people who detests doctors but I do want to do the right thing. Opinions please. Thanks!

I vaguely remember a recent post about someone's DH breaking his toe...I hope he's doing ok!

Re: Should I see a doctor?

I really don't know about this. I don't think they can really do anything about it.
Anyone go through something similar that can help?

Re: Should I see a doctor?

As a klutz who has broken every single toe on both feet numerous times, if you go to the dr, he MAY put a small splint on it, but thats doubtful. He will tell you to take Advil for the pain and ice for swelling, keep it elevated.

I know how much that hurts

Re: Should I see a doctor?

The purple & brusing will go away, thats all the blood rushing up to the top and you see it through the skin.

My dad's horse stepped on my toe once can you say ouch?

I had the same as you & it went away in a few days

Re: Should I see a doctor?

I have broken my 'little' toe on each foot several times. There is nothing they can do. Keep doing what you are doing and wear sneakers.

Re: Should I see a doctor?

I did the same thing like 10 years ago, and I wanted my mom to take me to the doctor, she told me there is nothing that can be done for it, so we didn't go.

Five years later I went to the foot doctor, and he asked me if I had broken my pinkie toe, becase I had a bone chip that was not attached to my toe, just kinda floating near my toe.

He said I should ahve gone to the doctor, so they could have repoistioned the chip, so it would have fused back into the bone.

So I would go, it can't hurt if they can't do anything.

Re: Should I see a doctor?

My mom does this ALL THE TIME! She's broken about every bone in both feet.

I think if the pain keeps up or the swelling increases, then you should go. You should keep it wrapped & don't wear any heels!!!

Feel better!

Re: Should I see a doctor?

I've done the same thing. I wouldn't go to the doctor, but it will really hurt for a week or so!

Re: Should I see a doctor?

I did this last year too. Smashed right into the corner of the wall. My toe was purple and black and blue for a few weeks. I'm sure it was broken. I didn't go to the DR b/c I was told there is nothing they can really do about it.

Re: Should I see a doctor?

Thank you so much for all your replies. I wasn’t going to go but shelzyp’s story frightened me.
