I WISH I had a dishwasher -Sorry reminds me of a 'red-neck' joke (no offense)
A red-neck definition of loading the dishwasher
getting his wife drunk.
Sorry, I'm corny.
I'm a vinager (and bleach) freak - but never thought of it on sponges - great idea!!

Re: Silly and embarrassing question
THROW THEM OUT!!!!!The kitchen sink has more germs than a toilet seat - that's a scientific fact. If your sponges stink, they're on the other side of clean.

Fighting Germs In Your Home
Doctor Has Tips To Disinfect Germs In Frequently-Used Household Items
POSTED: 4:39 p.m. EST November 25, 2003
BALTIMORE -- Doctors warn everyone not to neglect cleanliness while preparing holiday dinners.
More than 7 million American homes are infected with bacteria -- and the kitchen is a hotspot for germs, WBAL-TV 11 News Health Alert reporter Donna Hamilton reported.
The kitchen sponge is, by far, the dirtiest item in many homes, Hamilton reported. Sponges can often be dirtier than trash cans -- and even the toilet bowl.
'The sponge is the most dangerous place in the kitchen,' Dr. Philip Tierno said. 'It's replete with all sorts of potentially pathogenic germs -- like salmonella, E. coli and campobacter bacteria -- and people tend not to disinfect that sponge.'
Tierno is a germ doctor of sorts, revealing what he calls 'America's dirty little secrets.' He said the kitchen sink is germ-ridden.
Hamilton related to Tierno a saying that 'it's actually safer to eat a carrot stick that fell into the toilet bowl than one that fell into the kitchen sink.
'Do you really think that's true?' she asked.
'I know that's true,' Tierno replied. 'That's because you're dealing with the dead carcasses of animals which contain these potential pathogens that find their way in the sink drain and into sponges and dish rags.'
So every time you use a sponge to clean up meat, he said, disinfect the sponge with bleach and leave it out to dry. Dryness helps kill germs.
Let's move on to the bathroom.
'Aerosol from the center of the toilet can spray up to 20 feet from [the center of the toilet] onto cabinets, surfaces, toothbrushes, combs, brushes [and] whatever else you have out,' Tierno said.
The best advice: Disinfect everything and keep a lid on the toilet bowl when you flush.
Tierno also said you can use mouthwash to sanitize your toothbrush between uses and always let it air dry.
Other hot spots include the vacuum cleaner. It can actually spread organisms that you might have picked up, so it's important to change the bag regularly, Hamilton reported.
And disinfect the kitchen trash can every time you change the plastic bag. Tierno said that's because bacteria can actually leach right through the plastic.
Tierno is the author of the book, 'The Secret Life of Germs.'
