Silly Q about strapless dresses...

Silly Q about strapless dresses...

Can a spaghetti-strap dress be turned into a strapless dress w/out a problem (Ex: just snip off the straps) or will it have a hard time staying up?

Are strapless dresses constructed differently on top bc they dont have the straps as support, or does it just depend on how well it is fitted?

i would say it really depends on the dress and the size of your chest. If it fits snuggley then you can probably get away with cutting the straps. If not, you may have to have it altered or maybe have a bra or something sewn in

Are you thinking about turning a dress you already own into a strapless? If so - I would put the dress on and walk around with the straps not on (as in, hanging to the side) for a while. If it stays on, I think you're fine. If you have issues with it, talk to a tailor / seamstress. I don't think a seamstress would charge for you to go to their store, try it on and show them and get their opinion - so you could do that as well.

If you don't own the dress yet, I'm not sure if there is any way of knowing .... sorry, wish I could be of more help!

I'm thinking about our BM dresses. I really prefer strapless, but the girls picked a dress with spaghetti straps and we ordered it w/out looking around much. They are due in soon (mid may) and I was just curious whether it was an option to have the straps chopped when they have them altered. I think they would look 1000% better without straps (and would be my ideal dress), but I don't know if the girls would go for it.... they are all on the small side up top and were afraid a strapless dress would fall down. Didn't know if it was a possibility or not, dont want them to worry about it falling down...

It depends on how tight the dress is. If you're worried, your seamstress might be able to put a thin line of rubber along the top edge to keep it up. My Michelle Roth came with that and it really keeps it snug.

I really depends on the dress. I have worn both strapless and spaghetti strap dresses as BM dresses. The spaghetti strap dress could NOT be worn as strapless. A lot of the BM dresses that are strapless are made specifically so they are higher up on the chest and have 'bones' in the bodice to keep shape so they don't fall down. If your BM dress has the 'bones' then ask the seamstress if she thinks it will be okay.

my MOH has the same dress and she was thinking about doing that, but I think she decided against it....I don't think it has enough structure built in to stay up very well....I would be nervous if it were me!

the seamstress might be able to sew velcro into the bust of the dress and onto the strapless bras the girls plan to wear... so as long as their bras stay on.. the dress should stay up. but i agree, most dresses w/ straps are not constructed to be strapless.
