If you are choosing a pattern, the best thing is to take your China pattern with you to silverware department and just start putting different ones next to the China and see which complements each. I did this at Fortunoff's once I knew which China pattern I liked. I took a dish and brought it to the silverware department and actually the guy who helped me said, to try to look for similarities in each.
For example, I went with Gorham, Ribbon Edge (Stainless, I didn't want Sterling because I didn't want to polish them - JMO) with my Lenox, Opal Innocence. They both have similar details around the edges and I like how they both looked together.
