It lets you know when people respond to a post that interests you. If you are looking for specific info, you can subscribe to your own post and get the info faster rather than doing searches.

Yes-it emails, I just found a bunch a emails w/ 'since I'm asking....' in the subject line! This ought to be fun, sorting our my junk mail folder!
