At my new job, NO ONE SAYS 'BLESS YOU' or anything, for that matter when someone sneezes.
I think it's SO rude! Could it be a cultural thing? I don't get it. Anyone have thoughts?

Re: Sneeze Poll
I usually do.
But it's seriously one of the most bizairre things in our culture. I mean think about it. Why say Bless you? We don't say anything when someone farts..LOL
No but seriously people would say bless you when peopel sneezed b/c they were afraid the person was gravely ill and would die. Now we know that isn't the case, so there's no immediate reason, but it has stuck with our culture as 'politeness' I guess. I don't think it's a big deal either way. I mean when you say 'bless you' when someone sneezes...what is the point, really?

It's because they believed that your heart stops when you sneeze. But, yes, it is weird.

I see that a lot too at my job. No one says it. I just started here in Feb. And since then when anyone ever sneezes, they bless themselves! I guess b/c they are used to no one saying god bless you. Very weird.

Re: Sneeze Poll
Around my family , we always say 'bless you'
At work, it depends. Sometimess I just don't think its appropriate, other times (if its my immediate co-workers) I will say so
I dont think its rude at all NOT to say 'bless you' ... I certainly don't care if noone blesses me!

I always say 'bless you.' Just a habit I guess, but I say it to people I don't even know.

It's a habit for my family. DH and his family never say it. So, I bless myself!

I always did, but since I started working here - no one does.... so I don't say it at work anymore.

Re: Sneeze Poll
i sneeze a million times a day and someone at work always says 'bless you.' i tell them once is enough because they will get tired of saying it. but i say it also. i don't think its rude of people don't, its more of a force of habit with me

Re: Sneeze Poll
I say it by habit - even when I'm out in public and it's someone I dont' know.....even if they can't hear me...it's like a reflex. And when I'm teaching, and I sneeze....if no one blesses me, I bless myself and then thank myself to make the kids laugh

Re: Sneeze Poll
My husband is a serial sneezer... he sneezes ALL the time. I can't keep up!! So I tend to tune sneezes out. So I'm a sometimes person.

Most of the time I do. But I know that some people get offended (a friend of mine got yelled at by saying it to someone on campus).

Saying 'bless you' is a conditioned response. I don't think less of anyone for not doing it.

Re: Sneeze Poll
Now I am thinking, if so many of you have workplaces that find your co-workers sneezing all the time, perhaps the office needs a good old fashioned cleaning!!!
