I am so jealous, even if it's for work.

Isn't there a meningitis vaccine?

You HAVE to talk to my friend Edel who went to a wedding there a couple of years ago...she came home a week earlier than planned...according to her she will NEVER visit India again.

Been there, done that, got the virus. Not meningitis, thank goodness.

Here is my India story. Feel free to shiver in disgust.

I had a project to move 30+ business processes to Mumbai, India. I was in charge of a team of 10 people while I was there. The team was supposed to be training the replacement workers in India. While we were there, the worst monsoon in 100 years hit Mumbai. We were stranded overnight in the office, had to walk back to the hotel in the flooded waters, and I lost 15 lbs in 1 week due to illness from the contaminated waters.

We had to walk back to the hotel. Walk past dead cats, dogs, water buffalo and people. Yes, dead people who were trapped in their cars and drowned before they could get out. All of these dead things were floating in the water that we were sludging through.

Since I was the 'senior' manager on site at the time, I was put in charge of the safety of all employees who were stranded at the hotel. (50+ people from all over the world) We were stranded there for 5 days before it was safe to go back to work. Of course, my team wanted to fly back home immediately but the U.S. management team nixed that idea. So I had to 'pursuade' the team to stay. We had no power, no running water, no fresh food for days. I can't even go into all of the problems I was forced to deal with.

Approximately 1500 people died in Mumbai on that day. I was lucky to walk away with only various illnesses.

Here was an article on CNN about it. CNN

Yes, we were 'persuaded' to stay. I was there for a total of 6 weeks. We were told that if we were 'scared for our lives' then we could leave. We knew it would mean our jobs, one way or the other.
