So am I mean?

The people in my building are just - weird.
EVERYONE knows about Muscles with the Hows. (I talk to him and picture him pounding Russian prostitutes).

Then there are the Frenchies across the hall who I believe deal drugs.

Oh, and single 55 year old Martin down the hall who looks at me like I'm a steak and he hasn't eaten in six years.

But anyway - I don't talk to anyone unless I absolutely have to. This morning, someone got on the elevator and said good morning to me. I mumbled it back.

She said, 'Your bag's open. Don't you worry about someone reaching in?'

Yeah, I totally worry about someone taking cottage cheese and my journal. (My important stuff is in a side pouch, which is zippered. Also, I carry the bag across the front of my body).

I looked at her and said, 'I'll hit anyone who gets close enough to me to consider reaching in.'

I didn't realize how harshly that came off until I said it.

MEAN??? THAT IS AWESOME!!!

That's the same thing I would say!!

But I would never walk around with my bag open like that. I'd be too afraid of something falling out, or maybe a bird pooping right above me and some $hit falling in....

I would never be able to be that honest with someone like that. I would just be closing it up and thanking them for looking out for me. People have done it before. I think it's nice. they don't have to say anything. I don't know....

close your bag, babe! I would be upset it anything happened to your journal. I would miss out on some amazing thoughts you have in your awesome columns!

but if i got up the courage to offer advice to a stranger and that was the response - well, i would definitely be posting it on here and it would upset me LOL

In my defense - there are some wack jobs in my apartment building.

I would have at least thought the same thing. I hate when random people talk to me in elevators, or ever. I don't like random people.

But not mean. If you hit her with your bag, then that would have been mean.
