OK, how disgusting is it that FH paid the same thing in taxes (almost exactly) this past year that I MADE?? It drives me nuts that I spent 7 years and hundreds of thousands of dollars on my education and my wonderful, smart, successful FH with nary a college degree is making soooooo much more than me (this is in NO way a slam on anyone who does not have a degree, so please don't take it that way). It's just so wrong on so many levels.
On the plus side, he's the reason why I can still eat and have a roof over my head and buy pretty things once in a while!

You guys should donate to charity, my address is... hehe j/k
I understand you being ticked though..it is wacky aint it? I also make more than my college degree baring hubby of mine. I went to college... well at least for a year.
Yours is a Techie.. what do you expect.. he knew what was what before classes could even BEGIN to understand much less make up a course plan. So in a way he is educated.. call it OJT or trade specialized training.
Hey at least you have a grocery budget.. ours went out last weekend on my hair/makeup trial!!! So much for me being the 'bread winner'!

LOL! We do donate! I promise!
Groceries are, ironically enough, the only thing that I pay for out of my meager salary after I pay my loans and put money in savings.
FH is completely self-taught for the exact reason you stated. He definitely earned his keep, but c'monnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn....I want some moolah, too!

You want money? Sell your soul.. otherwise be grateful at least ONE of you has the dough for now... cause I'd trade you in a heart beat if I didnt love Jim so damned much! hehe

Oh and the fact that I don't think divorcing Jim would help my finances any either!

Trust me, you wouldn't want to trade. If it weren't for the paycheck he gets, I wouldn't be sticking around.
I'm SO kidding! Honestly, I just want enough to pay off my loans and actually be able to support myself (and my kids) if ever the day should come that I need to...you know?

Jannshari I can TOTALLY hear where you are coming from - so many of my friends are in debt -some as much as $125,000 from school loans - they left a job where some were making as much as 60K-70k and NOW are just so anxious to get ANY legal job to pay their loans back - My one friend had to take one starting at 31K he can't believe he went to law school to make 1/2 his orignal salary

Yeah, um, I owe $125,000 (which, by the time I'm finished paying off, will be about $300,000).

That pretty much is my original/current salary.

Re: So disgusting and unfair!
My turn to whine!
I spent 10+ years in school, counting college and graduate, and I don't make anywhere near what my friends with bachelors degrees make. I'm talking TENS of thousands below. And even with promotions, I will still never do as well as my friends - it's just the nature of the job to get paid so little for being so educated. (Come on...I've got serious loans to pay!!)
All throughout school we were told that if you have passion for what you're doing, then salary shouldn't matter. What CR@P!!!

No kidding! Try paying the bills with passion.
Although, on the other hand...many a lady has made a living off of, um, passion.

In other words, come work at the firm I work at. HAHAHAHA
J/K they are not ruthless or heartless. Just annoying at times!
Jann do you work for a firm or are you a solo practicioner? I know the lawyers at my firm and the other one I worked at actually were paid top dollar but of course work 80 hours a week. So it's either no life/lots of money or have a life and no money to do anything. What wonderful world it is right?
You should be able to write off your loan payments, no? Are they tax deductible?Ask an accountant.
Anyway just think in a few more years your loans will be paid off and you can relax a bit!

Re: So disgusting and unfair!
I hear you!! I don't work in the public interest field, but my salary is not that much higher than what public interest attorneys earn. And FH thought he'd hit the jackpot marrying attorney NOT! Thank god he has a good salary or else we'd screwed.

Re: So disgusting and unfair!
Maribelle, I work in public interest. My loans won't be paid off for 30 years. A couple of my colleagues and I are planning on starting our own firm next year, but that's hit or miss, you know?
Marcella, I think my FH thought the same thing! Hey...did you ever get a resolution to that issue?

Re: So disgusting and unfair!
you guys are making me nervous (JK) I am applying to Law School right now (just sent out my last application, keeping my fingers crossed) I am also thinking about Public Interest. As well as Immigration Law (don't really know if that would fit into Public Interest) or Real Estate Law. I know I won't be making that much money anyway but I have wanted this all my life and I will be extremely disappointed if I don't get in. ( I have a backup plan just in case) Hopefully FH will make decent money for the next 3 years because I don't think I will be able to work full-time and go to school full-time (he's applying to Suffolk County PD and is taking the State Trooper test in March, not millions in income but decent I think) Marcela, if you don't mind me asking, What kind of law do you practice

Re: So disgusting and unfair!
Ugh... although I would not trade my law school education (probably best three years of my life - met DH, made friendships that will last forever, great and interesting education, and gave my liver quite a workout ... I sometimes think I should have gone into psychology. It seems like I could have gotten more job satisfation and money without having to bill two gazillion hours per year. Then again the grass is always greener on the other side.

Re: So disgusting and unfair!
Gaby, when I started law school, the economy was still doing really well and no one was having trouble finding a decent paying job as an attorney. After September 11, it all went downhill. By the time you graduate, things will likely be on an upswing, so don't get too nervous. Plus, if your grades are really good, it's a cakewalk to finding a job.
Also, although my salary is really low, the benefits you get when working in public interest are amazing. We're part of the Legal Services Corporation and therefore, we're unionized, so job security is pretty much guaranteed. I pay $1 per month for full medical and dental insurance, have a life insurance policy that I don't have to pay for, my CLE classes are all free, and the experience is immeasurable. As much as I complain, I wouldn't trade this past year for the world. I have learned SO much and accomplished so much more than most of my law school colleagues in the same amount of time. I'm also about to be published, which is something that would never have happened if I was working in a private firm.
So don't worry yet. You've got bigger things to worry about than finding a job, namely, your first year of law school!
