Good luck!!

The most important thing is to HAVE FUN!!!
I'm treating it like adult dress-up time and we've had a blast laughing at the ugly dresses and oohing and aahing over the pretty ones. Never let someone pressure you. The first place i went was so uptight and told he i had to order a dress ASAP - at least 8-10 months in advance! That is BS and we just left there with no intenion of going back. Get your mom and a good friend who loves you and go play dress up!!!

Don't feel rushed. You are going to find a dress that you absolutely love and you have plenty of time. Relax, don't listen to the bridal shops, and try and enjoy it, it will find you!

FYI - I ordered my dress in April '06, they kept saying oh right on time, right on time, and it didn't come in until January of '07 b/c they were like we wait until the wedding is closer.

I actually did have to rush to buy my gown.

I got engaged in late December and set our date for July 1. With the holidays and excitement, I didn't even start looking for a dress until late january.

I, like you, was not a huge fan of the way wedding gowns looked on me. I didn't want a pouf and even the sheaths i tried on seemed too stiff.

I found a Winnie Couture gown at a small bridal shop in Brooklyn and as soon as i tried it on, I knew, I knew, I knew.

It is slinky and silky and sexy and still very much a wedding gown, without all of the layers that wedding gowns often have.

You should definitely check out her destination line (don't be put off by 'destination').

i just wanted to say....that some ladies suggested trying on some gowns that you wouldn't normally consider 'your style'. i 100% AGREE!

i love my gown....it was perfect for me....i would NEVER have in a million, billion years chosen it. I was totally against strapless gowns and i knew that my gown had to have straps or sleeves. at the dress shop, the sales woman said she had a dress that would work nicely....i put it on....and it was perfect. but had i SEEN this dress on the rack or even the picture of it in a magazine, i would have said 'YEAH RIGHT!'

try on EVERYTHING and ANYTHING....you just never know!
