ARGH! Ok, so, FMIL was talking to me about her dress for the wedding. I don't know how we even got into the discussion. Anyway, some background info, not much needed, JT's parents are giving us not a penny towards our wedding. They showed up to our engagement brunch and did not even give us a card, etc. So, FMIL said, 'I refuse to spend more than 200 dollars on a dress for this wedding. I think it's ridiculous to spend anything more on a stupid dress, and after all, I know I'm just going to be incredibly uncomfortable that day, anyway.' You know what. It took every freaking ounce of self restraint to not scream at this woman. I don't f-ing care how much your dress costs, but don't make ME feel like my wedding is an f-ing financial burden on you when you're not even contributing a goddamned penny towards it. I could not even believe my ears that she was complaining about having to spend money on a dress for herself. It's her f-ing son's wedding. The ONLY wedding she will ever attend for one of her children. ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok, vent over.

Mu future mil is like that- she says stupid things without realizing how it could hurt someone. But, one day I lost it. I told her to what to do with her mouth. Now she keeps her mouth shut.

I give you credit for staying calm. FH would have to hold me back. I agree with Janet though...tell her about Estelle's Dressy Dresses in Farmingdale, or take her there yourself. They have a great bridal dept. with all kinds of MOB and MOG gowns for cheap. Whenever I need a dress or a gown, I ALWAYS go there and never leave empty handed. I'm sorry she's being difficult!!!

Honey, I completely sympathise - I could tell you stories that would make your hair stand on end. Luckily, things are improving between me and FMIL.
Right now though, I'm annoyed that she's looking to spend more on her dress than I spent on my ENTIRE ENSEMBLE (dress, 3 veils, tiara, slip, and shoes) when she is only paying for the DJ (we're not even getting a light package!). 'Oh well this is the only time my son gets married' ARGH!!!!!!

Vent away!
If she wants to be miserable, then let her. I am sure she will look nice and try to not let her get to you.
BTW, my mother got a BEAUTIFUL gown for $200 at lord & taylors. I would have felt terrible if she spent a fortune on her dress.

I am sorry you have to deal with this. I think we need to learn to somehow take what our FMIL's say and let it roll off the shoulders and walk away.
I could tell you such stories of the controlling, psychotic FMIL I have been dealt but I am trying to let it roll off (for 2 days now)! ARGH!

Tell her to wear a Potato sac or go naked. Just kidding. Although you may not like to hear this it is your job to build a good relationship with her and be curtious because she is the mother of your life long partner. Tell her it doesn't matter what she wears as long as she's there to share in your special day.
