So, now that it's over...

So, now that it's over...

what went well and what was a disaster on your first married Thanksgiving?

everything went pretty well. Turkey actually came out amazing...a substitution I made in the risotto left a slightly 'off' taste, but it was still pretty good...

I didn't like the green beans almandine...but I followed the recipe instead of doing what I thought...I hate when I do that...

no major disaster though...dh and MIL were both pretty happy.

First married Thanksgiving:

I got drunk and talked about sex (not with her son) and writing with the MIL. Who was wasted.

So that was probably my best and my worst.

What Went Well: the company. We watched the wedding video. That was fun!

What Didn't Go Well: my SIL didn't cook enough. I barely got enough stuffing. Left overs were non existent. And my pies were the pink elephant in the room - no one touched them. So I was forced to take them home and eat them single-handedly.

ETA: I didn not bake the pies. They were bought from a great bakery in town. My selection was way off, I guess.

Re: So, now that it's over...

This was my first married Thanksgiving at home. Last Thanksgiving I was on my honeymoon, at a luau. I missed a wacky Thanksgiving at home, crazy aunt issues, etc.

This year was our first Thanksgiving married and at home. It was uneventful, except for my MIL and I trying to plan my SILs baby shower every time SIL walked out of the room.

Last year I missed my aunt sticking her foot in her mouth with my cousin's wife. She said something to cousin's wife like, 'Oh,I think it's nice/okay that you're Japanese because I read that the Japanese are the most accepted Asian people.' Aunt has no idea that it sounded rude, ignorant, etc. Who says that? And where the F did she read something comparing the acceptedness of various asian ethnicities????? And for the past year everyone keeps telling me the story, but then they ask me if I know why my cousin and his wife don't want to hang out w/ his parents.

Re: So, now that it's over...

First married Thanksgiving came and went extremely quickly. We had dinner at my mom's which was fantastic, FH made his famous fried cauliflower as a side dish which was fenominal, I 'baked' (' ' which translate into purchased) delicious apple and pumpkin pie as well as wine and pastries. The main topic of the night was 'when is the baby coming' and my grandmother giving me lunar instructions as to WHEN to do 'it' if we want to have a boy...

The next day we spent at MIke's sister's house where again we had a delicious dinner, and again the topic of the night was 'when are you going to have a baby' and our proofs, which everyone finally got to see. We had a blast looking through them.

This was our 1st married Thanksgiving but we didn't host. However we did have my step-daughter with us this year, that was nice!! We got up early and watched the parade together, I thought it was sweet how I'm passing on tradition to the next generation, plus it's where her dad and I got engaged 2 years prior.

DH surprised me by picking up a pumpkin pie!! He couldn't find a blueberry one but we got one on Saturday, better late than never!!

All of the food was delish and everyone enjoyed!!! DH announced that next year the festivities will be at our house, that's really fine by me since he's the cook!!!

Bittersweet part came at the end when my brother and his family had to begin their loooooong trek upstate. We prob won't see them again now until July.

OMG ours was such a disaster! But it all turned out well in the end. Dinner was at 8:30, we were hosting, just a few friends, everyone showing up around 7. Okay, so We woke up early and got cooking. Everything was going well, almost everything was prepared and just waiting to go in the oven at the right time. All of a sudden the water stops going down the drain in the kitchen. Apparently someone (most likely me) clogged the drain. We tried drano. No go. We had to call an emergency plumber to come and fix it. Obviousy he shows up at the same time as our guests. What a fu(king mess. But the plumber was able to fix everything pretty quickly and we were able to get dinner on the table, mostly hot, at 9. It was just about the most stressful day ever. Everyone had a great time and we ended up staying up until 2 AM chatting with our friends. It was a great Thanksgiving, but kind of made me never want to host another holiday again.

DH (an only child with very little family) said on the way home 'It just wouldn't be a normal holiday with your family unless SOMETHING happened.' I tried to explain to him that that is just what families do. And after 7 years, he should be used to it!!

We went to my sister's house which in itself is always eventful. Heard the usual sarcastic remarks and jokes at other people's expense. Was put to work on a computer problem by my brother in law. Found out one of my nieces wasn't there because she is in a battle with my brother and moved back in with my brother's ex wife.

But all in all, a good holiday. I made a cinnamon walnut coffee cake that went over big and a pumpkin pie that I was dissapointed with. I have to make my own pie crust next time - I have a feeling the store bought stuff is always going to be a problem.

1st married Thanksgiving (don't quote me cause I will surely remove this later)

FIL brought his dog to DH's aunt's house and sat with dog on the couch (pets are not allowed on the furniture). Everyone is afraid of FIL so no one says a thing. DH's aunt and uncle are fighting re: who should say something.

FIL attempts to bring dog to eat at dinner table - this is not allowed

FIL gets pissed and asks SIL if he can take the car because he is leaving with dog, but SIL says no

FIL sulks in living room for a while - we eat. BIL and DH disappear to try to talk sense into FIL.

Finally FIL joins us to eat.

I had to talk sex because that's what I write about.

One of the characters in one of my books is a sex addict.

She knows not to ask me anything - DH brought up kids when our parents had dinner with us recently. I nearly killed him - I said, 'You never mention my reproductive system again or it will attack you, I swear to God, I'll soomehow make it punch you.'
